some basics from a newbie

OK, I've got myself real confused! Can someone answer this question:-

- if I open up a midi sequence downloaded of the internet with say 6 seperate drum tracks (snare, kick, hh etc) in a programme such as Traktion 2, Cubase etc can I assign these individual tracks to a VST instrument, ie real sampled hugh quality snare drum etc, to play that sample?

- does the quality of the sample depend on the soundcard or will a basic soundcard still reproduce the sampled sound?

This is probably a stupid question to many of you but I'm finding it difficult to get my head around what I require.

the quality of the sample depends solely on the sample, not on the soundcard. However, depending on the soundcard, speakers, etc., the quality that you hear when sample is played back may differ...if that makes sense.

The answer to your first question should be yes.

Thanks, then at last I think I know what I need.

I've been sampling demos of programmes such as Traktion but struggling to get the results I want (the basic sampled sounds from the Wavetable synth are just not what i want!!). I like the look of traktion 2 but the only problem is that the demo version has no VST instruments, unlike the full version which has.

I think I'll splash out on the software first and then go for a sound card or audio interface if and when I want to record some real instruments into my pc.

jools, make sure that Taktion has an actual software sampler that will play the loaded wav files or whatever format your samples are in.

It comes with Sampletank amongst others - is this what you mean by a 'software sampler'?

Absolutely, SampleTank is a very good software sampler that is capable of loading sevearl differant types of smaples including wav files and converting them to be used in SampleTank.

I hadnt read the specs on what comes with Traktion, but i will assume it is a light version of SampleTank but it should be able to load a simple wav file and use it for playback of the sample.

Yep, its an SE version but still pretty good and up to what I require for starters (ie decent drum samples, grand piano, bass guitar etc). The package is pretty good, also includes amplitude SE, linplug RM IV and others.

Sounds like that will work great for you then.
