But after listening to CDs all night and day, I just gotta write something, albeit short and more of the same. Just a basic bed, short so it shouldn't take alot of your time. Just tryin' to get my bearings.

Example 5:

I just can't express my appreciation properly. For me, there's no way to tell if I'm in the ballpark. And if no one responds to this thread, I'll understand. I don't wanna take up the board with a bunch of examples... lol... I guess I am... Soon I'll actually write a full piece... ya, sure...

Ya, that is definately in the contemporary zone. You have now entered the Smooth Jazz zone. The piece almost ventures a bit into the New Age style as well. I hate to put stuff into genre's but that is about were you are with that one. Very pleasing and so much room for playing. Someone will bust me for this but I could almost hear a nice Dave Koz or even god forbid, Kenny G sax going on in there.

I didnt get a chance to play around with example 4 today. Had a water heater go out today so I spent a couple hours farting around with that. Minnesota is no place to be with out hot water in January!

Anyway, now I want to mess about with both 4 and 5 to see maybe if I can give you any ideas were to go with them.

But anyway, that is as contemporary as I could imagine going with those style pieces. You are probably more like me and dont spend much time writing in the hard rock arena. Although I love the music I seem to alwasy end up drifting out to wonderland or some other far away place when I start writng. Even my more guitar driven pieces still seem to drift far out into synth land using sounds that dont belong there.

Thanks for the listen Noize. I appreciate trying to classify the genre(s) of the piece, short as it is. I need to know what people think and I never feel pidgeon-holed. If you want to play around with anything, enjoy and don't feel pressured. Take your time. I was listening to DJ Shadow's "Changeling" when I started messing around with this. His drums are so forceful, which really sets everything apart. Plus he has such a great feel for rhythm that I have yet to comprehend...

Ya, I have yet to get the feel that he has for the rhythm thing. I think a lot of it comes from the fact that his use of samples from all over the board force him to edit in ways that are beyound most peoples patience limit.

Changeling is one of my favorites. The way things move around, yet stay within certain limits to keep a focus.

I listen to his stuff whenever I am feeling lost musically. I usually hear something in there that will spark and idea. Funny how that works sometimes. I do the same thing with Tangerine Dream and a few others. Just listening for something I might have missed 1000 time before.

Ahh, Tangerine Dream... another fav... Today it's Portishead | Portishead (1997). Very theatrical. Sometimes comical... Very strange stuff. Interesting vocals, love the band...

Yeah, I'm really enjoying Portishead! I think this is their first (self-entitled) album, but I'm not sure. Makes me wanna break out my Jean Michael Jarre albums! And I'm gonna look for my Tangerine Dream CDs tonight!

I have a couple of the Tangerine dream libraries as well as most of their regular releases. They were a huge influance on some of the direction I went while debating if I wanted to play live any more or simply do nothing but solo instrumental stuff. Funny thing Tuna who is now 16 is really getting into them and other bands like them. Although he does have a very broad musical palette I was surprised to see him take to them so deeply. I have a hard time prying my CD's out of his hands.
