latency in cubase

i am a novice to this, but a keen musician. i have an up to date pc, windows xp, m audio 2496 sound card and cubase 1.01 sx. to get started i have " midi"d my old casio keyboard to the sound card. i can open a midi or audio track and record. but when i playback i hvae to select " microsoft synth" for midi out to get any sound. that is ok, but the fundamental problem is that there is audible latency , even on single notes, and it is impossible to record aginst the metronome. i have down loaded the latest sound card driver and this is indicated in the "about" panel on the maudio popup. i have worked through both my audiophile manual ( unhelpful) and simon milwards fast guide to cubase sx ( well the first few pages til i got stuck!).I have tried various combinations on the control panel, the devices panel, and the buffer, sampling rate on the card. i think that cubase may not be picking up my card or it has somehow not been correctly installed. is there another place in the pc i can go to to test these ideas? any advice greatly appreciated.

Welcome to HRC!

I'll let something that uses Cubase here answer better but maybe I can be of assistance. In Sonar, in the settings you can adjust the latency timing and such. You just need to adjust these somewhere in Cubase. Peeps use Cubase here, they will be able to help you out better.

I use Cubase SX 2 so i'm not sure if its the same menu sustem but ....

Devices > Device Setup > VST Multitrack

There is an option there for which Drivers you are using.

For you it should read something like 'M-Audio ASIO'.

That will make sure you are using the M-Audio and not generic ASIO.
