MIDI controller with PC

Hey everyone! Here is a dumb question... I wanted to know if I can use a MIDI controller with a PC (laptop to be precise) to triger samples from a distance. I am working mainly with ACID and when doing live performance (don't laugh, I do have a real band) would like to trigger PLAY and STOP using a keytar instead of a mouse :D So... can this be done?

Cable lenght does not concern me at this point. At least this will allow me "some" movement, plus it looks wicked cool ;)

My knowledge of MIDI is severly limited, pretty much zero. I'm really a vocalist, who's been experimenting with computer generated music for a while, and now I am getting ready to take this onstage. I know MIDI controller is used to hook up to a sampler or a syntheziser, allowing you at least to step aside while performing, rather than being glued to one spot. Thats all I am looking for really. However in my case, I would use it primarily as a computer mouse and thats the main concern. MIDI controlers are not meant as such for all I know, but can this be accomplished without having to custom build something?

Well the answer to the question is yes. You simply assign a particular note, preferably one that wont be played at all. Or assign a two key stroke such as holding a a certain alternate control button on the keytar, and hitting a high note along with it and it will trigger stop and or start.

You simply set this up in the control preferances of Acid or what ever app you are using.
