Whats your budget?

Im not 100% sure..but if i wanted tou se a mic to record a piano, i'd most likely look at these....

$60-
MXL 990

$100-
Audio Technica AT2020

BUT IF YOU CAN AFFORD THIS, i WOULD SUGGEST THIS

$300-
SHURE KSM27

**these mics require a preamp**

First I would recomend peeking at Coco's 'Wee Link' post and check out Shure's web site for mic placement. There are a lot of ways to record a piano. There are a lot of different types of piano's to record. I have done a few baby grands with an x/y configuration just above the strings. For this I used Oktava MK012's. They can be a little hard to find but are under $100.00 a hit. Now that piano was being played as part of a 17 piece band so there were considerations such as isolation.

There was one husband wife team here a year or so back that did some very fine recording. I appologize I can't remember their sign on. If it comes to me I will refer you to their profile if it is still here. Recording Chick also does some piano recording that is pretty good. You might want to check out her profile.
