Avoiding Digital Distortion in DAW Recording

Im recording in Cubase SX, and would like some tips on avoiding digital distortion. Should you start a mix with all faders including master at the zero mark, or pull down to a lower volume. I've heard that in the digital domain, analog zero eguates to -6 db in a DAW. Is this true? Basically, can a tracks reading on the VU display in a DAW go over zero or on or slightly below. Make sense?
