DAW Controllers

Okey, so I've seen these DAW controllers that work as an interface for your computer, not a digital mixer per say, but a dedicated DAW controller. My question is do they work like a mixer, with the ins and outs, or are they just controllers and I'd have to go through outboard pres and mixers and stuff to get it into the computer?

they do work like mixers. but it depends on your software on how you 'route' your controller, but a 'dedicated DAW' should not have inputs and such for audio.

I think El Musico has it pegged. I have a USB 428 and I guess you could call it kinda a hyrbid. It has a control interface that works via midi commands sent across USB. It also has four A/D converters and 4 analog inputs with two analog outputs. The converters are good but the pre amps are not the best. It only has eight channels of control surface so when you switch banks e.g. from channels 1-8 to 9-16 you have to recalibrate the faders to the software. It does a pretty fair job of controlling faders and EQ controls, but falls short of doing anything for any FX. I use the control surface for "riding" a channel when that becomes necessary. Much easier than using Mr. mouse. You might say it does everything pretty well. Nothing real well. It's still necessary to have it and Mr. mouse on hand.
