"hot" vocals

i'm listening to john frusciante's "to record only water for ten days" (absolutely fantastic album) and i notice that he has this thing going on in his vocals. it's deliberate.

his vocals sound like theyre mixed deliberately hot. sounds they hover around the boundary of maximal saturation, but when he gets passionate, they distort. it sounds, i guess, like what you'd get if you were running a signal past 0 db, but without the horrible clicking and popping.

i really like this sound. how can i do it?
maybe it's just a regular distortion effect, like what i would get with my POD if i used a "blues" setting, where the signal distorts the louder you play?

or is there some other way to do this?

You might be able to get that sound with an amp or a tape simulator. I've done this with a DX plugin from Cakewalk so I could overdrive the voice that way. Sounded good. I even made the voice sound like it morphed into a feeding back guitar. I can't say the Cakewalk plugin is incredible. I'd look for something better.

iZotope has an interesting looking one:

And you can download a demo.

If you can do VST plugins, try a freeware plugin called cyanide II. really cool distortion that works great with vocals, bass, drums, etc.
