Well I would need to know which version of cakewalk you are working in before I can honestly answer the question. Some versions starting with Pro Audio 9 had automation for the effects send and return as well. But let me know which version you are using then we can go from there.

As a side note, if you fill our your gear profile with some basic info regarding equipment and software we can answer questions more rapidly.

Ya, it helps us get to know your gear a little quicker, and makes it easier to try and answer stuff if we, or anyone can look and see what you have for gear and software.

I am guilty as well, as my profile is now about 5 years old and not been updated for awhile, or even finished for that matter.

Anyway, to automate the effects in ProAudio 9 simply put your effect were you want it and set it up to go. Now you can simply arm the send from that channel or channel's to record automation and then for smoothness sake use the + or - keys to fade up or down. pretty simple task. Then just remember to have play automation selected for it to play back and fade out your effeect.

This is the best way to fade the effect as some effects do not accept automation, otherwise you can automate its output level or wet dry mix level.

Let me know if this helps, or if you have other questions on this.
