I want your opinion about this. Should I buy a Behringer B5 or a MXL 603s?

Both have similar prices and seem to be very similar mics, I am divided since I already have a Marshall mic and love it I am inclined to buy the 603S.

What do you say?

the mxl is wired with mogami so alot of people like em. i think the chinese mics are just ok. they sound realy flat and just dont have alot of presence. i never used a behringer mic nor would i want to(it just seems that with between the pa gear rack gear speakers and everything else you can think of, how much could they realy put into a mic?? i just go with the mic only companies)

my vote is for an oktava mk319, mkl2500(tube, or mk52(ribbon)

Some companies are more then capable of producing a wide range of products. And Behringer is one of many. I have used thier products for years without any problems.

Granted, they may not make the best piece in that field but for the price, and it appears price is a concern here, they are more then sufficiant.

I am with josh on the Oktava as I I have had nothing but good luck with mine and do love the sound it produces. But my suggestion is to go to your local music store and let your ears decide.

I agree with Noise. Let your ears decide. I don't have any MXL's only because I have found a few stable companies that I have had great luck with. Stack ranked I would say Oktava and Rode rank in the first slot, Behringer a close second. I have Behringer B2's primarily for the omni directional option, however, I have used them right next to a pair of Rode NT1's in cartioid mode and found them very accurate. The Oktava 319 I reserve for vocals as I do not enjoy the color they give instruments. However, I have heard folks do nice things with 319's on instruments which attests to "a matter of taste". If I had to choose only one large diaphram it would be a rode. Now on small diaphram I would go the B5 for sure. I have been eyeing them along with the NT5s by Rode. I am leaning toward the NT5's, however the B5 price looks nice enough to give a pair a shot. Basicly priced down under a lot of dynamics. I am sure with the maraid of instruments I record the B5's would become a stable on at least one application. I like the Oktave 012's for strings. They are warm and a little "woodie" if that makes sense. I find them a little colored for drum overheads but not objectionable. They also color woodwinds and brass a little as I usually use NT1's and B2's for room mics and both are very bright and accurate. I think either the B5 or NT5 would be a better match.

I have a pair of MXL 603 as well as a pair of MK 012's. They are very comparable IMO. The 603's are a little flatter sounding than the 012's to my ears, but they are very nice mics. I watched for sales and got each of them for $100 a pair. They are a huge "bang for the buck" at those prices. Build quality is not as good as the RODE's but few are.

If you can get either of them, (012 or 603) for cheap, you won't be disappointed IMO.

Blessings, Terry
