Hello everyone! I am a total newbie to midi controllers. I've been using fruity loops for about 4 years just for fun and making beats. I bought an Edirol PCR-30 which looks and supposedly is one of the best out there. My simple question is this, in as plain english as possible, How do I record stuff off of my controller. Please tell me the easiest way and the simplest way like you are talking to a 4 year old.

Just tell me what software you use and the settings. I'm having problems with I dunno . .. midi in and out and blah blah blah. Please, all I want to do is 'record' off of the midi and thats it. Please make it as simple and for the love of god HELP ME! I JUST WANT TO RECORD *crying like a little sissy girl*. Thanks! Very Nice site! i book marked it! Please Help

I am familiar with cool edit, logic platinum too soo please help this dumm guy. thanks!

it's really very simple... What you are going to do is hook it up to your computer via midi. So, you need to first make sure you have a soundcard which has MIDI... assuming that you do you are going to need a midi cable now, the connection on the soundcard will most likely be a Pin type connection, and the controler will probably have an input and output plug. So, attach the pin portion of the midi cable to the soundcards slot (the joystick/Midi slot) and plug the IN of the midi cable to the OUT of the controller, the OUT of the cable to the IN of the controller. Alright, so now hardware wise you're set up.

Now you're going to need to go into whatever software you're using and select the controller. In fruity you do this by options midi and select the drivers for your soundcard, there is also a button in that panel which says something along the lines of auto accept controller press that. Now you have to assign knobs and faders to things in fruity. So say you want your controllers knob one to affect pan on a kick drum. You would right click on the sample to bring up the property screen, then right click on pan and click link to controller. Others will have more info, but I hope this helps

Thanks for your reply! i totally appreciate it. My only concern is that this midi contoller is connected through a USB! I can hear everything and stuff I just cant set it up to record. Do I really need MIDI wires if I have a USB connection with this midi controller?

I mean if I could hear what I play on fruityloops I should be able to record it.

hmmmmm any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again for your answer!

I'll have to get noize to check on this thread, he's our resident MIDI gugr, but to the best of my knowlege, if you want the controller to control midi events it will need to be connected into a MIDI capable card. I don't believe that MIDI data travels through USB and I think that the USB is to deal with actual audio and to power the unit. MIDI is not actually audio, it is in fact DATA. For example when you use a midi keyboard and record that you are not recording the sound, you are recording what key was pressed, how long is was held for and how hard it was hit, so I don't think using USB alone you can control MIDI parameters within the software. I could be wrong though. From your post I assumed that you want to use the controller to control midi data in the software, such as paremeters of an effect or the pan or something.

After reading the specs on this unit I think that the only real reason the USB is there is to power the unit itself, as it is a midi controller all the data must be sent to and from the controller via midi. This is a nice looking peice of gear though, beats what I'm using as a midi controller

Thank you again Loki for your response. I think you just might be right but i would really appreciate your friends 'Noize' response too. Since this is a very nice midi controller (one of the top ones outthere, and for a great price 2) I dont event know how to use 90% of the things on this midi. I just the keys to make beats. and all I would like to know is how to record. Maybe learning the knobs would be fun too but that is after I learn how to record the beats that I make. Once again awesome response. Brilliant site!

I can give you a quick walk through on how to record a track in fruity using the Edirol as your keyboard. First, open fruity (obviously) and connect the edirol to the midi as explained earlier, then selct auto accept controller in the options, midi, screen. Now, in fruity assign your sound or softsynth to a sampler channel. If you're with me so far when you press a key on the edirol it should be triggering the sound or synth that is in fruity. If you want to record only to the patteren then select PAT at the top bar of fruity, if you'd like to record a part that will play throughout the whole song select SONG up there, but make sure the main automationis going through the entire length of the song so that it doesn't stop suddenly while recording. ANother thing you can do is assign the controllers notes to go directly into the piano roll, where you can snap them to grid and stuff.

OK, loopster, the Edirol should show up as a midi in port, and possibly out. You need to go into the options/midi as Loki described for fruity loops. Then you will need to choose the port that is for the edirol controller. That should be the midi in port. If you are hearing the instruments as you play the controller then you are allready set up to control through that port, you just need to set it up to record that port to the sequancer tracks. I have not used fruity live with my controller as I sequance in Sonar or P5. But as I said, if you can hear it as you play the controller then you just need to select that port ot record as well.
