i have an MD8 8 track digital recorder, and i need to know, when all is said and done, and i'm doing the final mix, i want to compress, and eq the mix as i'm recording it onto cd. i have a stand alone stereo component type cd recorder with a left, and right channel input connection, and on my MD8 i have a left and right channel out. how do i connect the compressor, and graphic equalizer in between, and in what order (compressor first, eq first?) any help??

MD8 outs to the compressor, then the EQ, then to the CD burners ins. You can try the EQ first if you like, I know several peeps who run their EQ before compresion when mixing.

you say you have a "stereo componant type CD recorder"? i assume this means it's a consumer grade unit meant for home use?

is he going to have a problem with a hot +4dB line level signal clipping on the burner's A/D converters?? that will make your master sound awful.

if so, it might be as easy a solution as adjusting the output gain on the compressor. a quick way to tell would be to look at the input jacks on the burner. If they're RCAs then they probably aren't designed to accept a pro line level signal. no biggie, just something to be aware of. what's the make/model of the burner? btw i always wanted one of those MD8s. ;O)

sorry jamie! i've got a classic cdr200 that i got from musicians friend. the outputs on the MD8 are rca connections for a DAT deck, Mini Disc deck, and a cassette deck. the assortment of ins on the cd recorder are also rca. so what you're saying is the signal is'nt going to be right?

so maybe i should concentrate on eq'ing, and compressing during recording?

It sounds like that might be your best bet right now. Unless you can find a compressor and EQ with digital I/O taht would allow you to remain in the digital world right from the MD8 all the way to the CDR. I believe the CDR should have a digital input so you might be OK. But ya, if you can I would try to rely on getting the EQ and such recorded dead on from the get go.

Unless, the MD8 has an insert for effects on the mian outs. That would be another alternative. You can patch it in on the final mix out.
