been looking at getting a midi controller for months when i came across the axiom 25. i decided today that yep ok im going to buy one of them, but then i had a look again at people using it on youtube and thought it sounded more for electronic music. whereas i only record more band type music, is it still worth getting one??

Midi controllers don't have any internal sound generation, so the youtube videos are probably people using it to control software for working with electronic music. A midi controller is just a tool, and you can use it to control anything you want, be it automations for controlling say, a software amp sim, or dynamics in orchestral instruments, etc. etc.

Depending on your budget, the Axiom is probably fine. I've heard good things about the Akai MPK controllers as well (well, except their drum pads suck for doing any actual drum programming, but are okay for like patch selection and stuff) I myself use an E-MU Xboard 61-key, but they don't make 'em anymore.

The Roland controllers that were bought out and are now the Cakewalk controllers are supposed to be decent too. And there's also the Novation line of controllers which are or were pretty popular., and generally good quality.

But yeah, if you like the Axiom, and you think it will do the work you need it to do, then go for it.

Woah! That's a lot of cheese for too few keys (and pads)!

I went with the Korg PadKontrol and a used Yamaha DGX-505 82 key workstation. If you have the space for it, drop an extra hundred and get way more function.
