I'm looking for a pre-amp Hardware unit to use with pro-tools 9. The Avalon is just too expensive. what's the best unit for under a grand?

Dec 19, 2010 05:08 pm I'd go with a True P-Solo and a Golden Age Pre73 -- You can have both for under $1k.
That said - There's a used M5 on ebay right now for $1100... Still, the P-Solo is a great "desert island" keystone unit and the GAP73 is a wonderful (and ridiculously cheap) color unit...

Dec 19, 2010 05:13 pm Depends on your I/O needs.
For my personal rig I don't need a ton of inputs so I've been looking at the apogee duet which is about $500 for 2in 2out which uses Preamp/Converter tech from the apogee ensemble. This unit is for Mac only.
If I need more I/O for recording or if I'm mixing then I'm in the studio.
Sound Devices has the USB Pre2 which I hear good things about.
****Wow... sorry I misread your post... these are interfaces with Pre's, Oops!****
Dec 19, 2010 07:02 pm Hey MM, not to hijack this thread, but have you had experience with the FMR Really Nice Preamp? Hows it compare to the True P you suggested?
Dec 19, 2010 09:50 pm I like it almost as much. For a dual-channel unit, you won't find better anywhere near that price range.

Dec 24, 2010 01:54 am now the FMR, Grace 101 and P-Solo , get a lot of press on the forums. I think for good reason. It was a tough call when i decided between the grace adn the True . No huge difference in the sound very clean and lots of headroom for both , i just got a better deal on the P-solo. I like all 3 .
