Good midi keyboard recommendation? Need2 Change VST w/ pedal & non-distorte

I currently have a Yamaha YPT-400 Keyboard and I wanted to upgrade my midi capabilities. I want to do more with it, and sometimes when I press 5 keys at once, my VST gets distorted. (left hand stops even though Im holding the note. Not sure if that's keyboard related)

Anywho

I would like to be able to switch my VST's and also VST's different samples with my keyboard or a (pedal maybe?) I'm not sure if my current keyboard has that capability.

I've always wanted a good piano too. So I was thinking, is the Yamaha YPG-635 or (DGX-620) a good choice? Does anyone have any experience with it?

Or if you don't, do you know of a good midi controller that has that capabilties. Any brands in particular to look at?

Thanks a lot!!

Though i haven't actually used it, Native instruments' Alicia's Keys VST looks incredible for a piano sound. Its about $100 at retailers. A quick google search should get you there.

There are program change midi signals, and i'm pretty sure that just about any DAW should be able to switch samples from your VST. It'll be linear though, like changing the tv channels and only using the up and down buttons on your remote. But most programs allow you to create a "playlist" of some kind. So if you load your favorite sounds into there, you shouldn't have too much trouble cycling threw them i wouldn't think.

I haven't messed around with that myself, but i know its possible. And the members on this forum should be able to help you figure it out if you have any issues.

As far as new keyboards and such, if you're using VST sounds, i'd suggest something like...this.

www.zzounds.com...-MDOKEYSTAT88ES

And then for program switching (plus, its great for synths or mixing automation)

www.zzounds.com...-KORNANOKONTROL

You can use the NANO to send MIDI signals set to the right code to do just about anything in your DAW. It is a bit difficult to get set up sometimes though. At least, i had to spend a few hours getting it synced up just right to do exactly what i wanted it to do in Cubase.

I use the Art Vista Virtual Grand Piano VST. It's incredible. All the overtones you get when you're playing in the higher registers are there, which is great. I can't stand the sound of any other piano plugin I have after using the Art Vista. It doesn't have that honky tonk detuned piano sound, so I layer in other piano sounds to accomplish that. It's a very simple, elegant VST.

The catch: the plugin hogs up 2 GB of memory!!!! It's definitely a plug you want to use to capture the performance, print the audio, and disable the track so you don't have to deal with all that expensive overhead.

Anyway, the distorted sound isn't due to your keyboard. Your keyboard is a computer controller, it is NOT an instrument. More likely is that your piano plugin sucks, or you don't have enough memory to run the plugins you have enabled.

JUST what I needed to hear!! Okay, seems like Ill most likely have to fork out cash for a new VST then, (if it isnt config related).

Im using The Grand 2 right now that I got from my school, they never use it. Ill look into Art Vista and Alicia Keys too.

As for the midi control related topic,

I would like to be able to change the VST and VST parameters from my keyboard instead of having to stop, go to my computer and change the VST instrument. After reading the manual, I THINK my keyboard may support what I want to do.

Do you think you or someone else could try to help me out (or point me in the right direction?)

I researched and found that what I want to do is probably called Quick Controls in Cubase. I click Learn, press the keyboard button I want to use to do my function...(Im using EWQL as a test, but I would like to be able to switch from EWQL instrument to Alicia Keys to The Grand with a press if possible

then I go to the Quick Controls box and select what I want it to do. (Confused on this part). Im using the EWQL Orchestra VST to control some Double Bass and a Violin. Quick Controls lists numbers 0-511 in the EWQL category. I have no idea how to find what number does what I want it to do. All I really want to do is switch from one MIDI VST Instrument to another.

Anywho, my EWQL VST looks like this:

In the EWQL Quick Control folder (not even sure if what I need is in here), I found that 0 is Volume, 1 is Pan, 2 is tuning, etc. But the setting to switch Instruments may not be EWQL related, but Cunbase?

My VST Manual:

My Keyboard Manual:

I know its a lot of info, I'm just trying to explain it, but this might be a simple know how for most of you guys. Once I can get this down and the skipping problem fixed, I can actually start recording my ideas on computer rather than my iPhone's Voice recorder!! Cant wait!

Hey. Ive finally decided on a type of midi controller. I had a chance to test out hammer-action keyboards, and it doesnt seem for me. I dont think I can play fast-paced violin parts of songs I come up with, but I could be wrong.

Does anyone know of any good semi-weighted or less keyboards? If It's 61keys, I'll have to get a mixer/controller with knobs and sliders. Otherwise, im shootin for more than 61 keys!
