configure a record bus in cubasis vst 5?

Hi, Mr Newbie here.

I am using cubasis vst 5 with a creative soundblaster audigy 2 ZS sound card. I am not using any external mixer at the moment and i don't really want to buy one yet.

My question is: is there any way at all that I can configure a separate record bus so that i can independently vary the level of the recorded source in a pair of headphones that the recording artist is wearing.

The idea being that the level of the channel being recorded can be made louder in the headphones than the other pre-recorded tracks that the artist is listening to whilst doing there performance.

IE - without upsetting the actual recording level.

I seem to remember that there was a way of doing this, something to do with cubasis having 3 output buses so you can bounce the signal onto one of these or something, but i can't find anything on it.

At present I wish to monitor recordings through cubasis although I could do it directly through the hardware if needs be.

Hope this makes sense! Any help or a simple explanation of why not would be greatly appreciated!

Btw: There seemed to be promise of doing it with the 'kx' driver for this card that some clever bod wrote, but the sound was so bad with this driver i never bothered to pursue that approach. Anyone know if this 'bad sound' can be improved.

Cheers

Ezza

Try a headphone amp. I use the inexpensive HP4 from Presonus which has 4 individual headphone outputs, each with their own control and also has monitor outs and a monitor mute switch for recording. I think Behringer also makes an inexpensive one.

I just had a look around and it turns out Behringer's inexpensive headphone amp is a lot less expensive than the Presonus HP4 that goes for around $130. The Behringer HA400 4-Channel Stereo Headphone Amp goes for around $30. There might even be some less expensive consumer level options, just do a google shopping search for "headphone amp" and make sure they have a volume control on them. I hope this helps.

Hi

thanks a lot for replying.

perhaps i am being a bit thick, but i can't quite see how i would be able to ensure that the performer hears themself, or an instrument that they want to 'sync to', louder in in the headphones. ie. louder than the actual levels that i am recording in cubasis.

Each headphone output on the headphone amps have individual volume controls so the performer can hear themselves or the previously recorded tracks louder in their headphones without affecting the recording levels. They simply turn a knob until it's loud enough for them.

Not sure about cubasis, but this is how I do it in Cubase:

Set your latency as low as possible

Create group channel. Assign group channel to an unused output. Patch output to headphones/amp.

Monitor live channel (eg. vox)

Go to 'sends' and send a portion of each signal you want in the mix the group channel you've just created.

You'll be limited by the latency of the Soundblaster and the outputs you have available. No real way around it unless you want to invest in a small mixer/other sound card.
