Hi there,
just retired and picked up my accousitc guitar again and taking lessons, I can strum, but using lessons to develop and learn, fretboard, notes and pentaonic's -
Also Looking at buying a studio ie Tascam DP 02 with the disc for recording - yep all a jump I know - but I have many one liners in my head (ending with mary) ha and some good strum patterns I like that work for me , wondered if the tascam is good choice ( I know they do cheaper) as I want to keep it simple but like the extras on this product and can buy in US a lot lot cheaper,(going over soon) also can I use to download to say garage band or are their other choices that work easily,I heard about boss 600 but has issues, any ideas appreciated, no mac at the moment just laptop, also I would have to buy a Mac so - wondered if it was really worth going all down that route at this time..
( I am no computer wizard re software and hated photoshop, cheers John

First thing you need, is photoshop!

Ha, just kidding.

Good on ya, John for getting into the 'groove'.

For the DP02, I'm not familiar, as I'm a PC recording type. Personally, I like the ability to see and change almost ALL aspects of my projects, and think a hardware DAW would be more restrictive for me now, as I've been on the PC DAW for ~10 years now.

But, that doesn't mean a hardware solution isn't for you. The smaller amount of options, possibilities, etc. could be a good solution for you, if you don't want to get over-blown by the myriad of possibilities a PC (or mac) offers.

You don't say what type / kind of laptop you have, as this may be a workable solution for a one man band type of setup. Most laptops now-a-days are quite capable of recording 1 or 2 tracks at a time, plus playing and mixing 20 tracks or so. My old centrino 1.6 does a fair job, I just don't push it too hard. It sounds like you wouldn't be either.

Garageband has quite a few followers, and is quite capable of getting your ideas down, mixing them up, and finalizing a decent song. There is a ton of loops / and other sounds for you to add in, plus they have some decent plugins to tweak up your projects. There's a few users on here that use GB and like it much.

If you do go a laptop / PC route, there is the line6 UX2 (this is an audio interface, which acts as your soundcard), which a lot of people on here are quite happy with. It's 200$US (i think). This offers you some nice features in a hobby-ist type package for not much $$$ (or £££).

For other software options, I use reaper, and have for 2+ years. They have a OSX version that works quite well on MACs, if you are going that route.

Good luck, and can't wait to hear a grand offering.

Well Prince ,many thanks for your reply, certainly got me thinking, currently I have a Dell Inspiron 600 with 1.8 centro duo with 3GB Ram, works ok, sound card as fitted so crap I guess, pc's are really cheap for sure hence the delay in buying an apple & I got a big list of wants !
I will look into the audio Line 6UX2 and reaper software ,
no doubt a lot more reference work B4 I take the plunge on some items , though my son lives in NYS so I can get the tascam delivered for $349 which is a great deal and as manual play I can play around with put my one liners etc.
and hear back some stum patterns to help me on my song and writing ideas and also hopefully improve playing and have some fun, Guitar wise I took a look at your wardrobe/closet and liked the idea of a Gibson J45 or L00 or the gibson songwriter from Gibson, though I also looked at collings and martyns all lots of dosh in UK..but may get tempted if I see something interesting on my trip to US soon.sound wise I like Neil Young and that sort of accoustic sound in guitars and also blues guitars for the pick and strum type leads that I could try, easy action a must, At home I have a washburn D60e from the 80's made in japan that sounds very sweet too..But I want to buy a real goody to enjoy and then pass on.
many thanks for helpful ideas..

Oh man, I own a 445ce 12 string taylor, and was feeling itchy during the last trip to a guitar center around detroit. I played a taylor 714ce, and O M G! It was Soooooooooo nice to play.

That would easily be my next guitar, if'n I didn't already have spendy guitars. I suppose I could sell the J45 to finance a 714, but I think I'd still have to pony up around 1k$ or more.

ug, too many nice guitars, not enough $$$ ( £££ )

I played an eric clapton 000 martin when at that guitar center. eh, I like my J45 lots better.

But, there's a dude on here (tadpui) that just got a very nice martin. Look back through some old posts and you can see his posts about it. He recorded a bit of it and it sounded very nice. He loves it =).

Well my friend, I think you might regret losing the J45 they seem so versatile, over here the 2008/9 true vintage model or custom which are not over badly priced if you shop around and the custom not top of range but nice reviews had some on board elec's and i have a fender accoustic amp,
The Taylors are nice and popular, especially up market models that play and sound good, martins have the woody tone, will check out stores in US and Montreal on my trip and see what I come up with..Think I wil buy the tascam dp o2 for home recording and fun.have a good weekend.

Yeah, maybe.

Another thing i noticed, is the J45 has a piezo element for onboard pickup. Not too nice.

The CE on taylors are a very nice and usable setup. Much better sound than the J45, as far as recording.

But yes, I certainly can't complain about the sound, tone, and playability of my J45.
