BBE Sonic Maximizer

Do any of you use one of these?

Is this something that's better for end use (playback) or will it clear up the signal into my DAW?

In other words, if I use one to record in, will it sound good during playback or should I not spend them money?

I was thinking about buying one because it makes the music sound really clean but the only people that I've seen use them are DJs and people using them for playback in their home theater. It would be cool if you can use them for sending your signal into your recorder and having it sound as good when you listen to the recording on your car stereo or Zune.

Does my question make sense?

I use one in my guitar rigs fx-loop. Can't recall which one... 482 maybe, but I know that the older ones are more desirable for some reason. It is interesting what it does to your sound. Although I don't apply the the fx-loop for 100% of my playing, between the BBE, the parametric, and a compressor(not in that order) w/i the loop, I can really twist my sound when needed, and still keep things 'leveled'.

From wat ive read most ppl use it at the mastering stage as kind of a 'sweetner/exciter' I have one that i got from a friend and it does make things sound nice, but not in a 'oh well thats everything i needed done way'. It does have to be dialled into each system its used on, so ultimately i dont think its an amazing mastering tool.

By its very mechanics it can help to make things cleaner to if u asked me, id use it during tracking on the actual instruments, like say in teh guitar amp loop, or bass amp loop, not as part of the actual recording chain because it is a kind of EQ type effect... to some extent and its better in my opinion to have a flat chain that responds to wat is being mic'd.

The jury seems to be out as to if its actually 'essential' to studio use or just 'preferred'.

My two cents: They're not worth two cents.

If you're doing high-speed pancake dupes with 1/8" tape, there you go. If you have a bass player who's too lazy to change his strings, it might make a reasonable band-aid (not nearly as good as changing the strings though). Otherwise, they tend to do exactly what people have been trying to avoid for the last 20 years.

I have one. The only necessary and applicable/worthwhile use has been on a bassist who needed to change strings.

I got this piece as part of a larger package that was more deal than I could pass up. I'll A/B one of my recordings with and without the Sonic Maximizer tonight; I haven't spent much time with it.

I've never used a Sonic Maximer, but I had always heard great things about them. I was at GC this last weekend and they had the BBE Sonic Maximizer 362 on sale for like $60 bucks, so I couldn't pass it up and I got it. I'm intending to try it out for processing hip hop vocals. After checking it out, the inputs say they're unbalanced, but the signals are ganged. I'm not exactly sure what that means or if it'll add line noise to the signal chain since it's unbalanced. I still have the receipt for it and I can take it back so I figured it's worth buying to try out. Is this thing worth keeping at all? Is there any good use for it in a recording studio?

I use a Sonic Stomp in my guitar chain and it does make my amp sound better FWIW

The one thing that I don't care for about them are the fact it's controls are either 'less', or 'more'... it doesn't really disclose which freqs it's effecting.

Is it an eq?

Is it a crossover?

Is it a floorwax, or a desert-topping?

Tastes great... and look at that shine!!!

I know people that would use one with a guitar processor: Boss GT6. They seemed to like it much.

Live music applications, not recording or studio.

Shiny great taste! Nice.

Makes everything sound better. Then you dial in some more. Then you realise you've put it on everything. Then you come back an hour later and it sounds like poos. Then you take it off. Then everything sounds better.

My experience with the plug in:-). I think it was made for days when you used to loose high end with tape??
