Routing behringer 1204fx with recording booth

Just wondering if anyone has a similar setup as I have a few issues. Here's my routing:

Control Room outs - B2031A Monitors
Alt 3-4 outs - UCA200 usb input - adobe audition
Main outs - record in MPC1000
Channel 1-2 in - Condensor mic. /w own phantom power from booth
Channel 5-6 in - MPC1000
Channel 7-8 in - UCA200 outputs
CTRL room/headphone out - booth Headphones.

Here's my problems:
When ALT 3-4 activated (to record into comp, ALT 3-4 to ctrl room/headphones button depressed) I want to hear my vocalist through my control room monitors, but so the vocalist cant hear their voice coming back into their ears.

Also when ALT3-4 activated the sound level jumps right up and has lots of white noise, but when i drop the level its not loud enough into adobe audition.

When I have my vocalist alt 3-4 recording into the computer and the MPC1000 playing on another channel through to the booth headphones i get bleed onto the vocal track. I'm Using sound cancelling sennheiser headphones in the booth so its not coming through the mic.

Any Ideas? Bad choice of mixer?
thanks guys.

easy answer would be a bit bigger of a mixer, one with channel inserts, or direct outs.

But, maybe this will work;

I think it will work =P

MIC 1 -> mixer input 1
MIC 2 -> mixer input 2

mixer track 1 aux 1 all up (or maybe unity or a little over)
mixer track 1 aux 2 all down
mixer track 2 aux 1 all down
mixer track 2 aux 2 all up (or maybe unity or a little over)

This sends all signal from track input 1 to aux send 1, and all signal from track input 2 to aux send 2. But not the other way round. This also still sends the incoming signals to the rest of the mixer, for later routing magic =).

mixer aux send 1 -> uca input 1
mixer aux send 2 -> uca input 2

Now you have 2 independent channels in AA, of only mixer channel 1 and mixer channel 2.

UCA output 1 -> mixer channel 7 L input
UCA output 2 -> mixer channel 8 R input

MPC output 1 -> mixer channel 5 L input
MPC output 2 -> mixer channel 6 R input

mixer ctrl L -> MPC input 1
mixer ctrl R -> MPC input 2

I'm not sure what's going on here with signal going TO the MPC, hopefully this will be close enough, and work for your needs.

mains L -> berry monitor L
mains R -> berry monitor R

Headphones plugged into mixer headphones jack.

Faders can change level of individual items (MIC1, MIC2, MPC, PC playback). Mains changes overall volume to everything. CTRL fader (knob) controls headphones AND MPC input. Hopefully those will be happy with same level.

In AA you maybe want to turn OFF direct monitoring, so you don't hear two versions in headphones / monitors: one direct through mixer, and one coming back from AA. If you want AA output feed in headphones / monitors (maybe with effects), then turn faders down for channels 1 & 2. Return tracks 7/8 will have prerecorded tracks plus inputs 1& 2 but with whatever effects.

I'm looking at the pic in manual, and i'm not sure what the mute alt 3-4 button does, if it mutes mains and sends to alt3-4, or leaves mains alone but mutes the alt 3-4 feed. Anyway, the way I posted 'seems' to be workable, without needing alt 3-4.

Depending on what the button does, you may also be able to use alt 3-4 for something else. I'd think you could also use tape output for something as well.

another thing I see, is that you can control the amount of signal going to AA, by playing with the aux send knobs. Be sure to gain stage these, so you don't send too much signal to your PC.

eesh, i hope that covers your needs. it's kinda hard to see it all working in my head, without hands on.

Good luck.

Hey pjk!
Thanks for your fast and detailed reply! i will try this arrangment as soon as i get home from work!!

I stuffed up slightly in the description of the mic. setup. I only have 1 mic. running into channel 1 on the mixer. NOT 1-2.
The Aux send setup should still work the same tho hey?

To answer a few questions which may have niggled you without being hands -on:

Mute alt 3-4 button, when pressed, mutes the main mix and sends signal to alt 3-4 bus which also has alt 3-4 master volume sliders. I was using the alt 3-4 setup to just send vocals to AA so i could still run tracks of the MPC and computer into the booth headphones.

MPC inputs are used for turntable sampling which i connect thru the mixer. But i only patch the turntable in when i'm going to use it. So i will have the ctrl room outs unused most of the time.

Thanks again mate i'll let you know how I go.

ah, i see. I was hoping that it wasn't either/or. But it seems that's the case. Hopefully the alt 3-4 bus will not be needed.

( thinking out loud, it seems kinda senseless to have a subgroup, but can't send signal to both mains and subs )

Oh well, for < 2 bills, what can you do ?

Hopefully the AUX sends route will fit the need. yeah, you'd only use the aux1, as you'd only be plugging in from aux1 to uca input 1. So no bother.

Yep, now the MPC inputs make sense. More than likely you wouldn't be tracking vocals AND samples to MPC, so using that 1 bus for both won't effect each other.

heh, wicky wicky

PJK!
You are a legend!!

The whole setup worked even better than I expected. Have perfect input into AA and no vocals feeding back into the booth. No bleed when running the MPC and it also eliminated a small hum problem I couldnt seem to find!! How's that!

Full mix including vocals, sounds lovely in the studio. I wasnt sure how the berry monitors would go but they are pretty good for the price.

Email me your address and I will make sure a case of beer or the like finds its way there.

Thanks mate!!

Wow, Legend, eh?

I'll have to show the missus this, she'll be impressed =).

Anyway, glad you got it sorted. I'm not a real fan of the berry stuff, but I have heard some good things about their monitors, for the price. That's one thing I have been recommending to people, when the budget is real tight.

Hmm, i wonder if the sub bus has a problem in it, making for the hum / buzz you mentioned. That's quite a bonus, having the routing sorted, PLUS, get rid of a hum. Cricket!

email's in my profile, but I'm concerned about sending a case through the post =)

Have fun.
