Fostex MR-8 Hardware HELP!

I have one of those regular red Fostex MR-8 multi-track recorders and Fostex neither sells nor supports my model anymore. The problem I have been having and that has been driving me crazy is that the interactive menu doesn't even show up. When I turn it on, all of the buttons flash quickly once, and the "Hall" effect button stays lit. I can't turn that effect off and the interactive menu, the very means of navigating the 8-track, NEVER shows up no matter what I press.

And the memory card I have in it is a Lexar 1 GB CompactFlash card. I have never had any problems with anything up until now.

I appreciate any help/tips anyone can give me.
