I am recording vocals with sonar XL 2.0, M-Audio interface and Shure condenser mic. I am applying the compression from sonar’s dxi after recording straight to the disk. I have read in articles that it is best to record vocals with a small amount of compresion onto disk and at mix down add as needed. Should I use an outboard compressor when recording the track and then use the dxi at mix down?

Apr 18, 2003 02:02 pm That is exactly the way I like to do it. I use a dbx 266XL and it does a great job. Very reasonably priced and nice and transparaent in sound quality. Using an outboard compressor in the signal chain on the way in will help give you a more even recorded signal. Be careful not to over-compress though. Keep the ratio around 2.5:1 to 3:1. If you squash it too much, it will be VERY hard to get it sounding good. You can always apply a little more compression after the fact with a plug-in.
Apr 19, 2003 10:27 pm I really think this board is the stuff...I went from a fostex four track, a sears cass deck and a shure dm162---to a full blown out pent4, m-audio system, and a message board full of talented minds to help me record my great music...you guys are the best.
Oh yea can't forget about my babybottle mic

Also, one thing I forgot to mention. You should be running from your mic into whatever your using to preamp the signal (mixer or outbaord preamp) and then to the compressor. You don't want to compress a non-preamped signal. There's just not enough strength to the signal to compress it accurately without it being amped.
