Stupid recording-through-mixers question

I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about recording, but I need some help understanding this.

A year or so ago, I was screwing around with recording and bought the Fostex MR-8 digital recorder.

I have since bought an audix i5 microphone.

I would now like to record with more than 2 xlr inputs, but thats all the recorder has. Is it possible to get a mixer and then send that signal to the recorder. In other words, can i send more than one xlr signal from a mixer to one slot in the recorder?
I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I have no idea.

I have a $500 budget for the mixer. Can I do this or should I totally restart buying equipment?

Thanks

Yes u can use a mixer to up ur channels, but since ur recording to the fostex, watever ur recording has to be mixed on the mixer first since u cant really tamper it track by track after u record.

if u want that editability probably have to expand into computer recording, but yes if ur pretty handy with a mixer and getting it right off the bat u could get one with however many tracks u want and then feed the left and right outputs into the 2 channels of the fostex panned left and right
