Nuendo 3 problem or Edirol UA-25 ex

My set is this

Sony Viao laptop with Nuendo 3
An edirol UA-25ex soundcard
An audio buddy to power my mikes
external hard drive for wav files

It is has all been working fine until I recorded a song with lots of vocal tracks
and I started to get clipping.

I found this was being caused by plugging my guitar directly into my sound card to record. (my amp is being fixed at the moment)

However recently when I recorded a song with a lot of tracks and tried to record the vocal Nuendo slows down including the sound. If I unplug my sound card it speeds up again back to normal.

I have tried reinstalling my soundcard and restoring my computer to an earlier date. I have also increased my buffer setting but so far the problem hasn't been resolved.

I don't know what to do, I seem to be able to record beats, guitar, midi, etc but when I do vocals it slows down after 20 seconds of recording. I have tried other mikes and new cables and none of it has made a difference.

I have only had it for 2 months and will be gutted if something has broken already.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Your laptop could be choking. Do you have vocal effects running as inserts on the individual tracks (thinking reverb/delay)? This is likely unnecessary.

Two changes you could make to resolve a problem like this:

1.) Instead of running effects as inserts on each vocal track, create an auxiliary input and bus all the vocal tracks out to the single reverb effect on the aux input. I recommend doing this because it saves valuable system resources and it puts all the vocals in the same room to give the vocal group a cohesiveness. I use a single reverb aux input for all the stuff (drums, guitar, vox etc) I record with pleasing results.

B.) Increase the size of your hardware buffer in Acid.

I think with that information and our good friend Google you should be a'ight.

Thanks for the help!

2 questions though...

1.) Did you mean to say increase the size of your hardware buffer in Nuendo instead of ACID?

That's the recording software I use. I did adjust the buffer settings in Nuendo but it didn't help.

2.) How would I go about creating an aux input?

1.) Yup that's what I meant. What did you set the buffer to?
2.) I have no idea in Nuendo; I use PT

Both of my points are moot if you don't have plugins on the inserts of your vocal tracks. Are there indeed plugins on the inserts of those tracks?

After further testing it does seem to be the plug ins that are slowing everything down.

I have tried defragging my laptop for extra space, turning off all anti virus, etc when using Nuendo but as soon as I add the plug ins to my track and play it back it cuts up bad.

Why didn't it do this when I first started using it? All my wav files on my external in terms of space it should be ok.

My buffer setting doesn't have any numbers just high and low settings, I put it on the highest but it didn't make any difference.

Arghh!

What plugins are you using? I have the same soundcard, and I have had the same experience, but usually this will happen no matter what soundcard it is, if you are having too many plugins or the wrong plugins. "PSP Wintage Warmer" for instance, or can be a ***** when it comes to latency issues. I mostly do not use it and other high quality plug-ins until after I have finished recording everything and start mixing. And you need to learn how to make buses and sends instead of piling plugins on every channel. Professionals do it this way too, because it has sonic advantages as well as being cpu resource friendly
