i use 2 pencil condensers, and a d11 for the kick to mic my drums and i mixdown to stereo before my comp (small budget set up)

i have an electric kit but its so bad im not going to get started.. using it with ezdrummer just doesnt turn out!

so since i have a module, and midi to usb cable, it wouldnt take much for me to add an acoustic trigger...

i have one open input on my mixer so i could add an sm47..(really lacking snare in my sound)

basically i want better kick and snare sounds... but i dont want the d11 to go to waste:\ is there anyway to combine trigger with a mic for some good sounds? and should i mic a snare or trigger it? or both!?

thanks in advance

Drumagog is my favorite triggering setup. It runs after recording as a plug-in and simply triggers off the .wav file peaks. They have a ton of samples of real acoustic drums and is the next best thing to getting perfect drum tones through your mics.

Beings it triggers after the fact you could use the mic or a trigger, I would personally use the mic as I like to blend the drumagog tone with the original tone.

Also, you may want to look at the recorderman technique for you overheads beings you don't have tom mics. It will also pick up the kick pretty well.

Just remember, a close mic'd drum will usually sound somewhat crappy/dry/dead by itself, you overheads are what really bring the drums together.

yea the recorderman technique works wonders! il look into drumagog, thank you!

and i was looking into the snare mic to get some volume to my snare not as much for better sound but im really liking the idea of drumagog, it will do both! thanks!

actually, would drumagog work for both snare and kick even though i only have stereo out from my mixer?

or i guess i can split the channels although that would make stuff really tuff i think...

do you think i could put snare and one over head to left channel and kick and one over head to right, so that i could trigger peaks from both snare and kick?

if so how would i go about fading? or would i have to worry?

or maybe i dont have to im not really sure how drumagog works:P

thanks again

Ohhh, stereo out, when you said four channels I was thinking 4 tracks as well. Drumagog is best used on a track that only has one drum on it.

Drumagog can do what you mention to a point. It has a 1 channel PEQ that you can use to emphasize a frequency that would be prominant in your snare but not kick. I personally would not bet too much on that feature though. I have used it to bring up the smack of a floor tom that was ringing too much on the lows but would not want to pull a drum from a stereo mix.

My bad on misunderstanding. In the end, I'd put that last mic on the snare and call it good.
