Help with syncing track timing?

Hey everyone, I've recently become interested in making what is known as "mash" music. Essentially, what I would often be doing is overlaying an accapella track from one song over an instrumental track of another song. My question is how can I get the vocal and instrumental tracks to be on time with eachother if they were originally recorded at different tempos? I am running Protools 7.1 (soon to be upgraded to 8.) Thanks for the help.

You'll be wanting to use the Time stretch function for that. I don't really know too many doing mash ups that are using PT though. Its not really geared toward that kind of thing.

Pt does not really have the sort of tool's your going to really want for doing that.

I'll ask this ahead then. So you have access to the vocal or instrumental stems from the projects you want to work on?

Yes, I have the tracks for the instruments and vocal. I've imported them to Protools. I know Protools isn't really the ideal program to use for this kind of this, I was just wondering if there was any way to do it within the program since it's really all that I have. I had read some stuff about the time stretch function, but unfortunately it's not available untill I have upgraded to at least 7.4. Guess I'll have to wait untill Christmas, when I upgrade to 8. Thanks Noize.

Yes, and unfortunately there are n o third party pluggins made to use in PT that are available for free that will do that.

You will find that PT is a very proprietary program and there isn't much out there in the way of free tools to use in it. They want you to buy everything from them or an approved third party.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful with that one.
