PreSonus Opinions?

So, I've decided until i can afford apogee ensemble / mac pro package (6k) that i'll get some PreSonus stuff to get me by. I've been looking at the Firestudio. It has built in preamps, but i'm trying to find a lower priced preamp for vocals, there's a PreSonus one i've looked at. any other opinions are good. thanks

I've heard some decent things about the firestudio. No experience though. I do have a channel strip by them (preamp, comp, and eq) And i thought it did a pretty good job. You'll certainly be happy enough with their products to get you some fun for now until you can afford your little dream package right there ;]

Another route to consider is digital modeling for your mic preamps. The reason i bring this up is b.c. i actually intend to return this channel strip i bought, because i realized that my line 6 gear sounds on par or better than this $300 channel strip (i got it used, 150ish). And its much more flexible, and easy to work with for a one-man operation (i can record the vox dry, then add the models and effects while mixing).

Line 6 UX2 will run about 200, UX1 is about 150. From what experimentation i've done with them so far, I'm fairly sure that i like the preamp models better than my actual hardware preamp.

You did mention you were hoping to find an even cheaper alternative than the firestudio though, so if i may, i've just gotta ask could you give us some more details on your needs? Recording/ Live use? Do you need a digital converter with it? And what mic are you using on the vocals?

i dont know what that does, do i need it?

i thought it'd be

instrument > firestudio > mac

or

Instrument > preamp > firestudio > mac

idk if i need a converter thing

Yupp, you'll need something to take the analog signal and convert it to a digital one. That being said, the firestudio is an audio interface so you're good.

But really, even just for vocals, i'd seriously recommend getting the UX1 or UX2. Like i said, i'm returning my Presonus channel strip not because it sucks, but b.c. the line 6 gear can make it sound so much better.

Eh, here i'll just make a list of the advantages here :]

-Mic preamp modeling: its not real but it sounds just dandy. You get 6 of them each with their own distinct flavor.

-Non destructive recording: You can record the vocals dry, then change the mic preamp model after you're done recording when you can really focus on mixing. You can also add reverbs, delay, eq, compression. The works. Which really comes in handy if this is your hobby and you're often working alone.

-Cheap Audio Interface: the UX1 is $150. they don't get much cheaper than that. The firestudio is also $150, so between the two I'd take the UX1 with Pod Farm and all the goodies!

-Guitar and Bass modeling: Its not what you need it for, but trust me, you'll love this things amp models. Especially considering they're practically free for the device you're looking for.

Ah, my bad. I didn't actually do a search for it and i was thinking of the "firebox." Dumb naming system if you ask me :P

Anyway, i'm not sure how much i can help. Thats a bit out of my knowledge range. Though my advice to you would still be the line 6 gear. You won't be disappointed, especially if you're just looking for some gear to "get by" with until you can afford that high end system. But now i'm getting a little too opinionated here so i'm gonna shut it :]
