a question about mixers

in general, i like small, compact units that can fit in my backpack, whenever possible. i was hoping someone could point me in the direction of either this mixer: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

or this compact one:
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

there's a 20 dollar difference, but im not skilled enough to know what any of the differences are. i see one has a fader and one doesn't. will i be sacrificing anything important by getting the smaller one?

The 1202 give you 2 extra stereo mix inputs, that is 4 extra channels of inputs. And the master output has a 60mm slider instead of a knob to control the level out. So your decision should be based really on whether you will use the extra inputs or not. It is always good to have extra, is how I feel. But if your budget is tight, the 802 will do just fine.

One point of note: I have found that the new UB series mixers have better preamps than the older MX series. The UBs sound more transparent, and for me this justifies getting the newer model.

I'm using the MX802. It's my first non-radioshack mixer and I love it. Sometimes hanging out making noise with friends I feel like I could use a few more stereo ins, but at home in the bedroom (studio) I've never needed all these extra inputs, so it's all about how you'll be using it. And yeah, i feel the pres are a little noisey, so any improvement there would be worth it.

Both mixers seem like a really good deal, so for < $100 you will not be disappointed. This thing seems to be built well and it's opened up a zillion possibilities for me..

Ya, flip a coin if you like. As stated they are both very nice mixers for the buck. I do agree with 12bass that the pre's are probably a little better in the UB series, but to appreciate the difference the rest of your equipment has to be pretty high quality as well. As Noise said for a twenty I would upgrade so to speak. That's 3/4 of a tank of gas. And I am sure that you will love the thing enough to want to play with it rather than run the roads, so see! its free!

I've been married for 30 years. You learn these things!
