Volume Trouble with Mixing Different Strings

Hello, and thanks in advance for any help.

I have a song in which two sets of strings, one staccato and the other not, are playing, but there's a problem. I mix using Senheiser HD280's (wish I owned monitors), but I make sure to check the mix on other headphones, home setups and car stereos as well.

The problem is that when mixing the intro, that has ONLY the staccato and normal strings, if, when using headphones, I mix the two to a volume ratio that I like, the normal strings are almost inaudible on a stereo (speaker) setup. At the same time, if I mix it on a stereo speaker setup, the normal strings are far, far too loud in headphones.

I understand that there's always going to be a degree of difference between the headphones and speakers, but is there a mixing/mastering trick to minimize it? I have dozens of plug-in effects that could be utilized but am in need a little guidance first...

Do you have a sample that you can upload either here or elsewhere we can here?

I will stop back a bit later and re read your post as well and see if there might be an answer right off. But usually it is easier to hear it to find out what is going on.

I guess after re reading this I would suggest simply finding that halfway point with the two level's as it seems that might be the simplest solution from the way you describe the problem.

But odd's are good it isn't that simple. It sounds like you need to do a little EQ sork to get a better separation of the two instruments to make them fit together. Also a bit of panning can work wonder's for that as well. Strings are tough sometimes.

But in all honestly hearing the mixes might make it easier for us to figure out were exactly your at with it.

I do have the same EQ applied to both sets of strings and I don't have either of them panned heavily, so I'll fool around with that.

I'll try to post the song tomorrow and will let this forum know when I have.
