Nasty crackle on all playback above 3.8 kHz on pc.

Hi all.

This one has vexed me. Got a nasty high end sound through my tweeters, [3.8 to 20kHz.]crackling basically, soundeds like I'm frying something. The mid's are ok as is the sub.

Now I have trouble shot it down to my pc, elimanated all other sources like desk, tweeters, cables etc.[ Bought some new tweeters thinking it was them!]

Using a 10 year old now Delta 44 soundcard. System is ok, E2220 dual core, 2Gb RAM on Win XP.

Have done 'dxdiag' tests and got some crackle during all tests. Says my card does not support hardware buffering after tests. Still can record and playback in SONAR, Reason too. Occasionally get this on a track in SONAR, guitar not vox.

Have set to ASIO drivers in SONAR, and of course the drivers are the latest set. But 'dxdiag' did say they were WDM drivers.

Whilst I build pc's I am not sure if I have set up SONAR's options on the soundcard as I should. But I get this on playback in Foobar or WMP. SO I'm thinking it isn't options in SONAR.

Pretty stumped now, any ideas anyone?

Does it do it only in those two players listed, or in everything?

It does it in everything being played back. Watched some BBC clips last night and it was present in them, not as obivious as it wasn't music but the speaking was high end hissy with some crackle.

That's why I am thinking maybe it's a soundcard thing as that is the only constant in the trouble shooting so far. I may borrow a mate's Delta Audiphile I just put into a pc I built for him to record at home with to test the soundcard theory.

Any ideas from your esteemed self and knowledge are welcome Noize2u...

Thanks.

On the dxdiag thing showing WDM drivers, that is because it cannot see the ASIO drivers even if that is what you are using.

You could try setting the buffer up in the Delta control panel to like 512 and see if that helps, but usually the normal players don't get effected by that. but its worth a try.

I have a Delta that was bought the first year they came out, and its still running smooth as ever.

But it is entirely possible that the 15 pin cable went bad, or something on the card may be buggered up. There is really no telling.

Agreed.

I have come to the conclusion I will have to swap cards and see if that makes a difference.

Need to find someone else with a cable too.

Thanks for the input anyway.
