Im going to be buying a new Lap Top this week and of course my power Mac decided to start acting up this week too. So im considering upgrading my Lap Top choice so it will work in the studio as well. Im pretty set on getting a Mac but was wondering what minimal specs i need to make sure I get.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Here's what we need to know before making recommendations:

What Software will you be using?

How many tracks do you hope to record at one time?

The programs im running now that seems to use alot of CPU power are:

Pro Tools LE
Drumagog
Auto Tune
Assorted other plug ins

And the most tracks I ever record at one time is 8

Thanks again

Well, to be honest, if you running plug's such as AutoTune and other assorted plug's. I would not be worried about minimum spec's. I would invest in as much power and RAM as you can afford.

AutoTune is a CPU hog all on its own. If your planning on running other software synth's such as Drumagog that will also drain a system's resource quickly as well. PT LE does not manage resources very well so I would as I stated above be more concerned about how much bang for my buck I can get rather then about minimum spec's.

Jim is more Mac oriented then I so I'll leave a recommendation up to him or one of the other Mac users here.

Just thought I'd toss my 2 cents worth in.

I didnt mean minimum as in I didnt want to spend the money to upgrade things. Im just an idiot when it comes to computers and wanted a little bit of reasurance in what Ive read up on about what I needed.

Yeah, like Noize says, with that kind of stuff running you're going to want maximum power. The new MacBook Pros have the 2.66 Ghz Core 2 Duo and that can be upgraded to 2.93. 4MB of RAM should be good, and I would upgrade to the 7200 RPM drive over the 5400 one. That's all gonna cost you a pretty penny, though!

Good luck!

And I would highly recommend investing in an external HD for the audio only. It can really help the performance on both a Mac or PC based system when it comes to running in a recording situation.

I would opt for 4GB of Ram personally vs the 4MB Jim suggested ;)

"I'm pretty set on mac". Is there any specific reason, just curious.

Thanks for all the input guys. As for why I'd like a mac, my last computer was a mac and everywhere Ive worked they used macs so ive just gotten used to them and like how they operate.

How big of an issue do you think it would be if I went with 4GBs of RAM 7200 RPM drive plus an external hard drive but stuck with the 2.66 Ghz instead of upgrading that. Or is that something I could maybe upgrade in the future?

Thanks again!

If you are purchasing an external HDD I would not spend the hefty price they charge for upgrading the internal drive to 7200rpm.

Let the 5400rpm run your OS and the external 7200rpm capture the audio. The difference between 2.66 and 2.93 will imo not be noticable, if it is cheap it wouldn't hurt..

My overall thought...

2.66
4GB
5400rpm internal
7200rpm external
