Would this be a good computer to buy for my home studio?

HI,

Was at Bestbuy today and saw this Gateway FX6800 with the new i7 chip and ddr3 ram, as well as two slots for Sata drives for easy expansion. Seems good, but there were a few negative reviews amongst the many good ones. It's supposed to be a gamers computer, but for the price ($1250) and the latest hardware it got me thinking about how it would respond as a recording computer right off the shelf.

If you were in the market, would you buy it ? Anything you'd swap out? (I read 3GB ram may not be enough but there are 3 more slots available to add to), and power supply should possibly be boosted to 850W). I'd be using cubase, to record a band of between 8-16 tracks at once (at the most intensive circumstances ). Any thoughts?

Well yes and no. No, because I can build a custom PC that is specced much better fro less money. But yes, for the convenience factor.

Although I would probably not use a 750gig HD for my OS drive. A second HD dedicated to audio only is a good way to go.

But also a negative on that machine would be all the pre-loaded crap that is on it. If you can trash all that then it might be a good box. But in Vista it is hard to shut down all the garbage that they install with it.

I guess my next question would be you have an expensive PC, you are not going to record with the onboard sound card are you?

Don't want to burst any bubbles but I have been trying to build a new machine with iCore7, I went to new egg and spec'd and it was easily $1000. "You" (not me with shipping) could build it cheaper, but not as much as you might think.

Icore7 920 = 299.99
3GB DDR3 kit = 109.99
750GB HDD = 119.99
X58 MB = 209.99
ATI 4850 = 144.99
Decent Case = 70.00
500W PS = 30-40.00

Total so far = 984.95

Even without the KB\Mouse, DVD burner, 15in1 card reader etc... I am already at 985.00 without shipping.

Add the fact that I don't have to build it and it's a pretty solid deal on the latest tech.

Agreed Cpt.

For most it would be a killer deal.

But in my case, I don't have to worry about delivery as I use a local guy that pretty much blows away any of the web prices you see. And yes, complete price through him is about $50 more then you show for your total so far.

But add shipping to anywhere else and it will go up for sure.
