How do I trigger loops from the drums in a live play?

I really need help here. I have a live gig and I need my drummer to trigger loops while playing. I have been told it can be done from a trigger but don't understand how to do it and what gear I would need. to further explain, I am doing 13 songs live and all the songs have full length pre-sequenced accompaniment in addition to what is played live. I want my drummer to trigger each accompaniment as we change songs. since the songs are on different tempos and keys, I am in a bit of a fix as to how to manage this. Can someone help me!

My drummer buddy did this when he was playing in Fla. He had a trigger pad, with like 8 pads on it. When he'd get to a point in the song, he would just hit the correct pad, and whatever pre-recorded sample would play back.

For the next song, he would pull up the next 'profile' or whatever it's called, so a different set of samples loaded into the 8 pad spots.

I can't remember what sample player he used, but it's certainly do-able. I'd be thinking a laptop, but i'm sure there are more robust ways of doing this.

MPC devices come to mind.

You would have to have all your material recorded and stored in the device already, but that probably wouldn't be a huge problem, just record the parts into the device, and assign it a profile / pad location.

Oh yeah, and welcome to HRC.

Do you have any ear right now that you are going to be running the playback on? That will help get you going in the right direction.

The pad pjk is probably talking about is something along the lines of the Octapad from Roland or a similar piece.

Yeah, I think that's it.

Something like this:

I'll ask him more about his setup, and get some specifics.

Yep, we used a similar device at one time live. It works great. I simply set up a sampler for him to trigger and load the patches between tunes via midi myself.

That was eon's ago during the days of old school hardware samplers with very little memory and 8 bit samples. Man, those were the days!
