musescore.org/

Open source notation editor, works in linux and windows. I know Muse has been around for awhile, and while I don't really use their sequencer, I've been looking at this notation editor, and...I like it.

The layout is fairly intuitive, and the editing features themselves are fairly powerful and straighforward. I've only just downloaded it and plinked around here at work, but I think I'll be using this quite a bit at home. The layout just works well for my logic flow I guess.

Also, This is a fairly new one I think. They just released a stable version last month, and they're up to 0.9.3. As with all open source, I guess it's kinda in a perpetual development/beta, but from what I've seen of it, it's pretty spiffy. I think this could be a good one to keep an eye on for those of you who don't particularly like Finale or other "more advanced" score editors. It doesn't feel quite as finicky to me.

Hopefully they'll add in some more plug-in support and VST later on. Definitely worth giving a try. Looks like I've got some inspiration to get back to actually writing :)

Looks pretty cool. Although I do like the notation software I have in Sonar I am always willing to try something new. And this looks pretty interesting. And yes, I agree it looks much smoother to edit in the Finale and the like.

If I can port it out to my synths I would be pleased.

And of course, I get home and install the thing, and get the dreaded "blank screen" bug some users get, which they're still trying to figure out. :P The latest version seems to partially fix it, but 'tis a shame. Still worth keeping an eye on though. :)

Ya, I will be. I might grab the latest beta then and not install this supposed stable version. I'm all about not crashing the thing for free software.

Well, looks like they've released R1300 today, so I plinked that down on my machine. The good news is that the latest revisions work just fine when creating my own scores, and music xml and Golliwogg's Cakewalk display just fine.

However, older demo scores display the notation properly, but the titles don't show up. I'm starting to think maybe the metadata in the older files needs to be updated or something. I also suggested to them, that .msc extension may be playing havoc what with windows and .NET :P

I hopped on their forum to help with suggestions/ideas/causes for problems that crop up on my end. heh. Guess i'm a glutton for punishment ;)

Oh, and I don't think musescore would crash a machine. It seems stable as far as the nuts and bolts go. It hasn't crashed or errored out on me, and that's a good sign. I think it's just UI teething issues. :P

Ya, I did a bit more research last night after posting but was too lazy to come back and post again.

I found that same issue that it appears to not cause any major crash issues so I may just run with the stable release and see what happens. Then if I have to turn to the beta's if I get the black screen.

I think I'll refrain from getting involved in another forum though as I don't think I want to get tucked into another beta team. But I will post any bug issues I might come across for sure.
