Hi

I've finished a new song with a friend of mine. The genre is rather slow and light rock. You might remember some earlier songs of mine, called "Depression" and "Lost Smile" posted on this forum as well.

the song can be listened at: koti.mbnet.fi/rontte/music/sophie.m3u

if you want to download the song:
users.tkk.fi/~rahlman/music

please tell me what you think :)

Overall I really like the song. There is one thing however that bugged me a little and that is that there are a few rough edges on the violin during the intro. Maybe they are intended, if so than that's just me.

On a good note, some parts of the song remind me of Pink Floyd. Dunno if you'll consider that a compliment, but in my book it is. :-)

I enjoyed listening!

Agree with Nightcap on the enjoyable listen part.

I'll ask right off how you recorded the violin part, what mic and if it went through mixer or simply a pre amp. It almost sounded like an electric going through an amp with a bit of gain on it. You can really hear the scratch of the bow during the intro.

I really liked the guitars though and that added to the Pink Floyd feel of it. And yes that is a compliment from here as well.

Over all I liked the arrangement and the feel of the song.

So how was it recorded then? That might help us give a little more advice to clean the rough edges from it.

It was recorded through a condesator microphone about one meter away. And then through a preamp to computer.
And the mic was Behringer B-2.
The main thing is that my violin skills need some improvement. Or refreshment, haven't played it for eight years or so before now :)

I see, so the sound could be a little combination of bowing technique and maybe the pre amp being up a tiny bit high.

I'm thinking that if you tweak the pre down just a tad to keep it from hitting peaks you will be just fine for sound then.

With the mic sitting at 1 meter you might have had the pre cranked a little higher then needed.

I would honestly move the mic to within 0.25 to 0.50 meter of the source. That mic will pick up a lot of noise running the pre amp cranked so that might help the sound a lot there. With a large diaphragm condenser unless you want to capture a lot of room ambiance try and keep it within that 0.25 to 0.50 meter distance.
