okay here's what I've got.. Yamaha AW16:
AD converter: 24 bit linear, 64 times oversampling.
DA Converter: 24 bit linear, 128 times oversampling.
Internal Processing 32 bit.
Internal & external Sampling Freq. 44.1 kHz (+/- 6%)
Recorder Resolution: 16 bit linear (non compressed)
-------------------------------
So.. I understand that often enough the weakest link in modern recording can be the converters.. and I don't really have very much of an idea how my converter situation compares to a "good converter situation".
I can output as audio via monitor, stereo/aux.. or digital via disc/.wav & stereo optical output jack.
As I think more about creating a premaster I am curious what these values really mean with regard to my output options.
Thoughts?

May 31, 2008 11:59 pm Well the AW1600 may not have the best converter's but they are good quality. But that said if your 1600 is one with a built in CD burner then I would opt for that. Or you can do a digital transfer to the PC to mix and burn a final CD to send to mastering. With those options you should not loose any quality. And remember that a final CD is 16 bit at 44.1 khz so up converting is not an absolute must.

Jun 01, 2008 09:54 am yeah it does have the cd burner. I should have written mine as AW16G. Thanks!
I do need to track down a point where I am losing quality. I get a great sound within the machine.. headphones, and even an audio cd of my mixes with one of the Yamaha "mastering" selections sounds really strong. But if I burn a cd of wavs to use my pc's CoolEdit and HarBal I feel I hear a loss of some kind. Still working that out.
I am getting to the point of deciding to get as good a mix as I can within the Yamaha.. then get someone with mastering experience to polish. But it would be nice to be able to use volume envelopes in cool edit. That's the only reason I use it.
