DAW Controller/Interface

Okey, so I'm looking into getting a DAW controller, but what I'd like ideally is something with preamps that I can plug directly into, go into the box, and then mix on the hardware while effecting the software... so I'd like a combonation mixer/control surface. Also, I'd like it to be in the 2k price range, if not below.

Anyone know any gear that does that?

I'll have to look later. But i know both M-Audio and Mackie have a unit like that. Just can't remember what they are called at the moment.

Hey Loki, I'm running a Roland VS2400CD DAW now and it has 8 pres. Might be what you are after. I feed my pc via firewire and it uses MIDI to control SONAR (although I'm still working some stuff out).

M-Audio Projectmix i/o is the one I was thinking of. There is a Mackie version as well.

Are you kidding????

If your simply looking at the number of faders and knobs and thinking that is a lack of controls then you need to dig a little deeper into what those units are all about.

Each knob and fader can perform multiple functions and I don't mean 2 or 3, I'm talking a butt load. And just because there are only what appear to be 8 channels of fader and control that is not at all what these are all about.

You simply assign scenes to a template. And if your template needs to control 48 tracks then it is a matter of simply bouncing from each set of channels it controls such as 1 - 8, 9 - 16 and so on.

Buttons as well can have multiple functions on these units so there is absolutely no lack of controls on these things at all.

what I mean is I dislike having to switch between banks and all that crap. Ideally I want a desk thats for the most part set up like a real desk. Not one fader, two rotaries, and a lot of bank switching...

but i'm needy lol

Well then, if that is the case you will be looking at more like 8 grand or more. And that will be for a used one. Full on automation control desk's are not cheap at all.

How many channel's are you really looking to get into?

I'm going to need at least 16 channels. 24 would be better, because it would give me a little more play room, but really 16 is all I'm going to need any time soon. I've definately outgrown my simple little preamp and delta 44 set up.

I know I keep talking about this but you are describing a V-Studio. Check out the VS2480CD. You should be able to pick up a used one for about $1500. Don't worry, they are rock solid so you should be able to find a good used one.

nah, that things only got a couple faders, and what looks to be lots of bank switching to get into the eqs and stuff like that. Neat, don't get me wrong, but not for me. I mean, really I could do all my mixing using my radium 49, but thats enough of a pain in the *** having only 8 faders and 8 rotaries to control the entire software. I don't need an SSL console, but something kind of like that would be neat. A logical channel strip with a fader for the volume, a rotary for each eq control and pan, mute solo and arm buttons, jog wheel, etc.

I know I'm not talking cheap here, but its what I want so if it's out there, I'm gonna find it.

I'm probably going to be getting one of the units like the tascam or multimix posted above until I can afford something more along the lines of what I want. How're the pres on those? Should I put some money away for some better pres, or are those pretty decent? Right now the only thing I have to compare it to would be my Behringer Tube Ultragain
