Its called 'side-chaining'. Unfortunately its pretty complicated to do in Cubase compared to other apps, and I'm not even sure Cubase LE can do it. You'll have to search around. The easiest way would be to use volume automation :-(.

What happens is that: You insert a compressor with a 'side-chain input' on a the bass track. You patch a send from the kick to the bass comp 'side-chain input', and then every time the kick goes, it compresses the bass track, there-by knocking a couple of dB's off, or 'ducking'. Hope that makes sense.

No worries. What version of Cubase 4 do you have? I haven't used it (I'm on SX3), but i 'hope' they would have included side-chains by now. You'll need a plug in that has a side-chain input as well.

Does your outboard compressor have a side-chain input?

The Cubase 4 that is included with the Firestudio is actually Cubase LE4. But it should have a comp pluggin with sidechain.

Otherwise there are a couple of freebies at www.kvraudio.com that will work great and are free.

Herb had a link to a place with a load of cool high end pluggins that were free as well. And that place had a comp with sidechain.

Soundcard output 1 (BASS) to comp input. Output 2 (KICK) to side-chain input. COMP OUT to soundcard IN.

Hit play and mess around with settings. There will probably be a 'side-chain' or 'key' button on your comp as well.
