the thing this time is my vocal track sound tinny and metalic. i have a shure sm58 mic, cubase se3 and an audigy soundblaster pro 4.
ive heard people talk about compressing but have no idea how to do this. i have a baritone vioce but like to sing in tenor but even in low range my vocal track soundds metalic! i was thinking of getting a rode nt1a...would this help?
thanks for your help in advance!

Do you have an example you could post so we can hear what you mean??

(The soundblaster could be your bottleneck.)

im sorry,i havnt yet. i hate the vocal sound im getting so all ive got is drum and guitar tracks.
id like to try and get a warm rich sound, ive just bought a pair of fostex pm 0.5 monitors as i thought my desktop speakers were not up to it.
i have to turn the mic level on the soundcard right up to the top more or less to get it loud enough too and the guitar is pretty tough to get loud too.

Sounds to me like the SoundBlaster is your downfall. It doesn't have the mic preamps and such you'll need to get the sound you're looking for; that and it has inherent noise issues.

If you're looking to go with a Rode NT1, you'll be needing Phantom power, so in turn you'll be getting a pre amp most likely too, but you'll still need a better soundcard, even a USB external interface would do, like the Line 6 TonePort UX-2: www.zzounds.com.../item--LINTPUX2 which actually comes with phantom power and mic preamps built right in.

Welcome to HRC by the way. :)

thanks keith!
i dont really know much about this, does this have midi interface for my keyboard too? i cant see it in the description. also is this an actual soundcard cos i says its usb so would i have to get rid of my soundblaster or just keep it installed? i know these are really newbie questions but please bear with me! :)
are there any alternatives? i see on my local music website the edirol ua25,is this the same? i also see an M-Audio FAST TRACK PRO! it says these are midi interfaces, are these different to soundcards?

You would keep the soundblaster installed, but you would disable it and use the UX-2 for all your sound needs. It's an external unit, so it sits on your desk. As for midi, if you need it, you could look into what I have which is a Tascam US-144: www.zzounds.com.../item--TASUS144 which has the same features, with midi added and is 50$ cheaper.

And yes, they're all on the same level as the Edirol UA25, just that either I or very trusted members of this site have one of the devices listed above and highly recommend them. There's tons of options when it comes to soundcards, external audio devices, A/D converters, and the confusing thing is, they're all the same, but also very much different.

A midi interface will only handle your midi, and not your audio in and out. Which means buying one of those will allow you to hook up your keyboard, but wont do anything for your microphone at all. An external audio interface is like a soundcard, only it's external and has a coupel bells and whistles that most internal soundcards, like the soundblaster, dont have- like microphone pre-amps, some have phantom power, some have midi, etc etc. This is where the research comes in. You've got to figure out what you need and what works best for you.

No question is "Newbie" to me. We all started somewhere, right?

keith, you are a legend. you have helped a great deal,i will research further.
unfortunatley it looks as though its going to cost me more money! lol but then everything seems to!
im loving this forum already,i posted this question yesterday on cubase and no-one has answered it yet!
expect many more "starting somewhere" questions lol!
i suppose the thing to do is lose the the soundblaster!
thanks again.

I'm not suggesting the SoundBlaster is useless, it's just not suitable if you're after pristine recordings. Someone else will surely chime in with a different opinion, but in this case, I would do as I've recommended, and did actually. Your questions are always welcome. Keep in mind though, that it's always good to do your homework first. :)
