Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has checked this thing out or played with one.

I was very impressed with many of the features and only found two negatives so far of which one I would hope Line6 is working on.

Some of the key features I like is the "Tone Direct". It seems to bypass your recording software yet send a processed signal back to the Mains (1-2) for monitoring. Supposedly with minimal latency as it addresses the fact that when we send processed signals through our recording software there is usually a heavy dealy that makes it improbable.

I also like the fact that there are two headphones outs with their own volume controls and are seperate from the master volume controls. Oh, there is also a mute button (on the interface itself) for the master volume, nice indeed.

The downside, no linking of two UX8's and no optical cable. In the faq they say the "do not support this feature at this time". I would hope they plan on adding the ability to link them, but with no optical I see no way yet (don't believe SPDIF has the bandwidth and as of now I would send 8 tracks from layla as a stereo signal through spdif just so I may capture the live feel and then later redo guitars\vox).

So yeah, the input outputs are plentifull for an 8 channel system, the tone direct monitoring would really be beneficial when tracking (singers always perform better compressed imho). If you only want 8 tracks I guess this is a godsend for $500, but I am leary of jumping on this train without the ability to add an extra 8 channels later on.

One question for you UX2 owners, how much of a PC do you think I would need to record 8 channels WITH compression (maybe some modeled pre's also) for when tracking drums?

this is just my opinion, but the toneport series has been great for bringing a level of quality and ease to home recording, but when ur moving into 8 channel rack mountable gear... to me its like entering nascar with a go-kart. but thast my opinion

I own a KB37, which i love for functionality and fun, but in the end when i do "serious" work i go to my M-Audio Delta 66.

Im not bashing the unit, just to me in my opinion it sounds different, the line 6 is a bit cold and thin to my ears.

Technically, if you are not using the gearbox software for modeling you are getting 8 nice quality Mic pre's. The delta 66 does not even have pre-amps so unless your saying their AD convertors are superior I really don't get what your basing your comments on.

I went ahead and bought it yesterday(they said I could bring it back if I didn't like it, nice to know the store owner). First thing I did was record some drum tracks, far from go-kart sounding.

It captured everything exactly as it sounded in my monitors, I was quite impressed. Also I love the fact that I can record a dry and processed signal using only one input via gearbox.

I tried bass, guitar (clean&dirty) and several different presets on vocals along with fiddling with some of the pre's manually. This thing is going to make my life very easy. All they need is a little EQ to sit in the mix and I will get to spend more time on the drums.

I am going to work on a new recording tonight to get my feet wet with it. More impressions to follow. Oh, on latency, when using the tone direct at it's fastest setting, I set my buffers at 256 and all was well. When not modeling 128 worked just as well as my PCI layla interface.

Oh, some light reading... just a two post thread. Nice line from the guy with the Delta 1010 (which has higher quality converters than the Delta 66).

Good stuff Tripps.

UX8 is too much for me but does gearbox now allow you to different effects etc. on all 8 channels like it did with 2 ???

Negative, you can apply the effects to the first two channels while recording. I imagine unless the interface itself did the processing the CPU power to model 8 tracks would be ridiculous.

The UX8 does include the VST plugin version of gearbox, but I have not got around to using that yet. I am going to try some of the modeled pre's and their compressors on the drums and see what happens. So technically I can apply modeling to every track I record.

So yeah, I ran bass through channel 1 and used the other 7 for drums. For the bass I then set audition to record 9 and 11 which gives me the modeled take and a dry (or compressed only) take which sounded quite wonderfull.

Also, having the dual headphone outs is quite nice. Wet+Dry, just wet, or just dry through the 1/2 output, with a dry signal through the 3/4.

I am going to get one of the Mon800 from behringer and then probably the amp800 so I have the ability to control the mix volume, the incoming wet and dry signals and give the performer control of how much they like of each signal.
