X-FI Xtreme Music sondcard settings?

I'm using Creative X-FI Xtreme Music soundcard with Sonar. I'm using the ASIO drivers for this card in Sonar.

This card has an ASIO volume control.
Please anyone who owns this soundcard:

1)can you tell me what this ASIO volume control does?
2)And to what level this fader should be set?
3)Also what level should the master level of the soundcard be set for composing tunes in Sonar or any other sequencer for that matter.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi sourberry,

I use FL Studio, but the concept should be similar. I use kxAudio drivers with ASIO for my older SB Live plat. I'm guessing the ASIO volume is most likely the volume control for the soundcard/driver itself.

As for the master volume control, when I'm working on music, I generally leave that alone, or set to "zero" and instead adjust everything from the mixer in FL Studio. I'm guessing Sonar has also has a mixer feature, I haven't used it myself so someone better informed could answer better. Anyways, for working on music, I'd manipulate the mixer channels and leave the master volume alone.

If you have issues where the volume levels are too high and the tracks are clipping, then you might adjust the volume for the master channel on the mixer to bring the overall levels down a few dB, but for the master volume for the sequencer (Sonar) I wouldn't turn that down unless you're getting smacked upside the head by your wife/girlfriend/S.O. for having the music too loud ;) So leave it at 0 or 100% (however it's labeled)

Thanks, but the thing is besides the ASIO volume fader on the sound card, the sound card Master volume fader also has an effect on the audio:

Because if I turn the master volume fader on the soundcard all the way down, I don't hear anything. And If I turn it way up the audio gets loud.

Can it be that the ASIO volume control on the soundcard is my input volume to Sonar?

And that the soundcard Master volume is providing output volume for my speakers? But the thing is that my speaks are powered, so they have their own little volume knob.

So that's why I'm confued between my soundcard's ASIO fader and the Mater volume fader. There are so many volume stages. Please help.

I think you are 100% correct. The master volume is only output, you could have it turned off and still be able to record (although you wouldn't hear it) and the other would be your input volume.

Leave your master volume on full and use your speaker knob to adjust your output volume.

In the end it does not really matter, the only thing that matters is your input volume and what your output levels are like in Sonar.
