New here! got a pre-amp to digi 03 question...

Hello! This message board seems great - and if anyone could help me with my 03 setup, '08 will be a great year.

I've recently bought a focusrite octopre 8 channel preamp/compressor/limiter and I'm trying to solve a few probs..

Preface: I've got everything set up. The 03 I/O settings are recognizing the ADAT. So far I have a work clock cable going from the out on the Octo to the In on the digi03. I've also got an optical cable and a 25pin to 1/4" cable going from the outs on the Octo to the In's on the digi03..

Problems:
1) I am getting no input signal - so there is a prob between the Octopre and 03... i think..

2) re: the 25 pin cable with 1/4" jacks. Do I even need this thing? The guy at Ametron (hollywoods recording mecca) said that I didn't - and may enjoy 16 inputs if I didn't use it, and allowed the sound info to travel into the digi03 through the optical cable. Is he correct?

I feel that my prob isn't to complicated, but I've hit a wall.. or need another coffee.. or possibly less coffee.

any help is great. thanks!!!

Hey Marathonman, Welcome to the HRC.

I've not used either device, but I'll shout out a few thoughts.

You say you're getting no input signal. That's not specific. Is the preamp seeing signal? Looks like there's lights on the front of it, so is there a 'signal present' light? First need to see that the preamp is seeing signal.

also you could test to see that there's signal coming out of the outputs, by test connecting an output to a different device, like a mixer, or stereo input, etc.

Next, does the pre have a setting for where to send output? like, can you switch from out->adat, or out->analog? Maybe there's a setting to tell it were to send signal.

Next, the analog cable (25-1/4") will be analog output, to send signal to a device without an adat input. I don't think you will need it, as the adat will send 8 channels to the 03.

Doesn't look like there's 2 adat ins, so it looks like there's 8 inputs on ADAT, and 8 inputs analog, maybe that's how it get 16 inputs?

There maybe a setting in the 003 to tell it to listen on the ADAT or on the analog ins, or maybe both. Maybe it's set to analog ins, but the octopre is only sending signal out the ADAT?

Sweetwater.com deals with a lot of digi stuff, and they're very helpful with forums, and the like. Maybe stop by over there in their forums with this question, as I don't think there's too many people on here that are using DIGI w/ octopre.

Just run ADAT output of the Octopro to the ADAT input of the 03. You have to set the 03 to clock off the Octopre via ADAT. Basically, make the Octopre the master. You don't need to connect analog anything with the octopre, besides connecting microphones to the XLR inputs on the Octopre. It's real basic actually. I wouldn't worry about the Wordclock though, just clock via ADAT. Hope this helps. BTW, all of theses setting is Pro Tools can be changed in the System Preferences. Good luck and welcome to the forums.
