Some Great Articles I Found...

I know I haven't posted in ages, but I just wanted to let everyone know about a great web site I found written by the professional Grammy-nominated engineer/acoustician Dave Moulton. He has a wealth of articles about everything from double blind testing (and how we often dupe ourselves into hearing differences that don't exist) to the loudness wars, hearing loss, and mixing tips. I've only just scratched the surface of what he has on there, but I've really been enjoying it so far. His approach is refreshing.

I found out about the web site from my recording professor, who knows and has worked with Dave in the past. He swears by his "Golden Ears" frequency training and his $30,000 self-tuning BeoLab Loudspeaker (won Time's coolest invention), which apparently he's had the pleasure of mixing on... Lucky :P

Nice to see you Porp! Yep, been there and read tons. It is recommended reading for those who have the time. Some of it might be a tad deep for the noob, but even the newbie can garner some great info there.

And ya, those speakers are absolutely killer. I was lucky enough to have been able to get a listen to them. Never got to mix there or anything that lucky.

Whoops, I guess I should have looked around a bit more before posting!

But yeah, after reading and hearing so much hot air out of some people, it's nice to hear from somebody who takes a real sensible (and dare I say, scientific?) approach to sound quality (and it's nice to know I'm not crazy for doubting some of these people to begin with!). I think sometimes we lose sight of our priorities in audio.

Good to hear from you guys again :) Over this past semester and summer I've begun taking recording classes at the Hartt School of Music. It's been a great reinforcing experience, and very helpful. They've got a real top-notch team of professors there. The particular one I spoke of earlier who has worked with Dave is Gabe Herman ( www.gabeherman.com ). He's the engineer for JamSpot in Boston.

I also met an engineer from Nashville last summer though a pretty amazing set of circumstances and *might* be doing an internship down there next summer if things work out right!

Nashville, you will have to look up WYD then down there.

Interesting site for that professor.
