It will record simultaneously. But all 12 of the inputs into how ever many outputs there are (2? 4?). It won't have 12 outputs, obviously.

Output would be via Firewire, so mixer outputs wouldn't be relative in this context.

This above was grabbed directly from the alesis site, which would lead me to believe they're all kept separate, but it doesn't spell it out distinctly, so I'd still want to know for sure.

in this document:

alesis.com/downloads/manuals/MMFW12_16Manual.pdf

there's a picture of multiple inputs, so yes, it appears the channels will stay separate inside the computer, not just sending a stereo pair.

I have the 8 track USB and you're right, of course, the cable carries the feed both directions.

When recording, though(on the 8 track anyway), trying to record while listening to prior tracks is an issue.

I would hope on the 12 it isn't.

Then again, I do everything myself so I never needed to use more than one channel, so what do I know?

Sorry for the misinformation....

I have the Firewire 12.

You can take all 12 tracks individually through firewire into a computer, and there are actually 2 additional outputs that are stereo mixes from the mixer settings itself, incase you just want to mix it on the mixer and record it as is.

It works pretty darn well.
