Simple yet powerful editing programs?

Hi, i am new to the world of computer based music recording and editing, and i'm having some trouble finding a good piece of editing software.

to paint a quick picture, i am doing all the actual recording onto a 1/4" reel to reel tape machine, and transferring the music onto my computer through an M-Audio Delta 1010LT.

right now i am using Audactiy to record the tracks onto my computer, then editing them in Kristal. I like the simplicity of the editing in Kristal, but it seems to be lacking when it comes to actually recording tracks (i need to be able to record 8 mono tracks simultaneously while being able to monitor levels on each), and i'm not sure how good the plug-in support is either.

so i am looking for a program that is relatively simple, but is good for both recording and basic editing, and has good plug-in support for more expensive plug-in bundles like Waves.

sorry if you hear this sort of question all the time, but any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

well there are a ton of great program out there . you could check into Acid 6, which is a very easy program to grasp but you can get deap into it, plus you have all the loop options. The fave around here for a lot of us is Cakewalk Sonar , great program everything one could want plus more, but it'll run you around 300 for the "Studio" version (which is the same program as producer, producer just as a few more plug-ins and soft synths) Cakewalk also has a good line up call home studio which is great to start out with . Since you have a delta card you could get Pro Tools M-powered a good app, it has a few limits like track count (49 i think) . Cubase is another fav and there are a lot of opptions as far as price goes. There are a lot out htere and you'll get "this ones geat" and "that one sucks" for all of them, just check out there web sites compare and try and find the best of for you.

Try reaper, www.reaper.fm

It's built as audio recording / editing first, and now is adding more features.

Reaper handles plugs without bother, and is cheap (as it's uncrippled shareware)

One area that's probably useful for you, is you can split and glue parts together. Very cool for heavy parts editing.
