...to wire your studio?

Since I'm in IT I have access to miles of CAT 5 cables. I needed a cheap solution to wire up my studio so I tried using it. Worked out very well for me. Has anyone else out there tried this?

You mean for other than ethernet, for audio and speakers? Never heard of that. I suppose it would work as speaker wire, but the individual conductors are pretty skinny, and I'd worry about possible signal loss.

I have my 1/4" faceplates going back to my control room on cat5. I doubled up the top jack, but single wired the bottom one (there's 2 on each faceplate).

Mostly they'll be used for headphones in my live and iso room, but I may send guitar signal through them, if I need to, but am kinda leary of RF, bleed, and timing.

My xlr faceplates are all on mic cable, though I was considering using cat5 for that too, cheap bastard that I am =).

Actually CAT5 is built in such a way to reject noise and attenuation. I wouldn't use it for speaker wire, I'm talking about line level stuff.

I'm with pjk. I say if it's cheap and it works, do it!

This is what got me experimenting with it in the first place. I get it for free!

I was tempted to do a side by side comparison (i've got a NT5 pair) using 1 mic cable, and 1 cat5 cable, to see if there was any major difference in sound, and in the waveform.

Other things took precedence . . .

Beerhunter, I notice your avatar is thinner than it used to be. Did you switch to Lite?

lol - no, don't do "lite". My wife has made me switch to "half sodium salt", "no fat yogurt", "Becel light margarine" and "fat free salad dressing" but I draw the line at "Lite" beer. lol

Yow! That would be an interesting test. Agreed, twisted pair is just that twisted to reject the antenna effect of wire (bleeding in) but mostly at 60HZ (old telephone technology as it was usually strung under high power wires). But this is surely not the same signal rejection technology as used in balanced (TRS) connections. I would obviously be terrified of pushing any kind of current across 22aug single strand! Insta-toster! You could use old telephony tricks like grounding a couple of spares on one end (both ends usualy introduces ground loop hum).

Regardless, let us know how it goes! Very interesting!
