Howdy, I just put together a home studio.
Heres what all I have:
4 piece drum mic kit by Technica
2 SM57's
1 MXL 990
Behringer MX9000
M-Audio 1010lt
M-Audio ProSound 2 (Something like that, dont exactly remember) active monitors
8 On-Stage boom mic stands
Heres my issue: Ive had this setup for... about 4 days now with everything working. Already, the MXL has started these weird "clicking" noises that are about -20dB and shows up on my meterboard (thats when i have the gain at about 15dB and speech into the mic gets up to about -5dB).
So, Im going to assume that my MXL is bad. I need a new vocal mic!
Also, Im interested in purchasing some outboard tube preamps, and it would be a bonus if they had a compressor and limiter built in.
Any ideas?
Also, more instrument mics might be nice, any ideas for that?
Im on a budget, the most I can spend on a mic right now is around $250.
Thanks!
Ryan

Jan 08, 2007 04:06 pm I am looking around, and Im thinking that for a nice preamp to start with a Focusrite OctoPre LE should suffice. Any comments/recommendations with that?
Then, a dbx 166XL for compresson.
I still need recommendations on vocal mics, kick mics, and piano mics.
I tried today to mic my grand, used the 990. It didn't turn out too well, I dont like the sound it gave. I might try again today using the 990 on top and then a 57 underneath, maybe that will give me the sound I am looking for. The issues I had last time were that you could hear me lifting the pedal too much, and that the sound wasn't as bright as I would have liked it to be, it just didnt have that typical piano CD "glimmer" too it.

Jan 09, 2007 09:07 pm The one thing I found miccing a grand piano on the cheap is using one LDC and a pair of SDC's for the stereo image. You can get a pair of something along the lines of the Samson C02's for around the $100.00 mark and they work very well for the price.
What you will do is find the best place to get a mono overall sound with the lrage diaphragm condensor and then set up the 2 small diaphragm condensor's for a good stereo picture.
Make sure and set up the mic's and listen to get the best sound by first quing the LDC wihtout the SDC's on. Then mute the LDC and set up the levels of the 2 SDC's.
