Sync Problems

New to the forum and new to home recording. I own Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and record onto my laptop, a new hp Pavilion. I run my guitar into a Toneworks processor which I then run directly into the mike input on the front of the hp.
I'm having a problem with multi-track recording and would appreciate it if anyone had any idea how to fix a problem I have.

Basically, everytime I record a second track in the multitrack I find on playback that its out of sync. The two tracks start off in sync, but slowly (after about ten seconds) go out of sync. My processor is a centrino duo, so there shouldn't be any issue with computer speed. I have tried checking 'correct for start sync', but it doesn't rectify the situation. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be thankful for the help.

I'll assume your using the built in sound card of the laptop. One thing is you need to use the lilne input rather then the mic input for recording anything other then a computer mic.

What you are experiencing is called latency, its the delay the low budget sound card chip intruduces when you try to record. How much ram do you have in the laptop? That can contribute a small portion to the problem as well.

But mainly you need to set up the buffers in CEP 2.0 and odd's are good there is no buffer setting for the internal sound card.

Hmmm, if I remember correctly there is an option in Cool Edit 2. It is a checkbox and you may have to browse around in your options to find it. But it was titled something like...

"Automatically correct drift in multitrack"

I sweated hard over this exact problem back in my CE days and am pretty sure the start sync has nothing to do with it.

If I am crazy and that is not an option, then do as said above and manually enter the latency and try recording until it stays in sync.

I too suffered from an almost identical problem. I spent hours tinkering around in Cool Edit Pro on my Dell, moving between the sound card in my computer and the one in my US-122. I moved the latency to each extreme in every category to no avail.
One important note. I was using the trial version. Well now that my trials up I am moving back to Cubase. Please post if you find a solution.

The option CptTripps refers to is "correct for drift in recordings", and it's right above "correct for start sync" under Options > Settings > Multitrack.
