Improving live sound - what EQ's compressors/gates etc?

Hi,

I'm on a tight budget and need to invest in some gear to improve our live sound. I was thinking a good start would be to put this www.behringer.com/DEQ2496/index.cfm?lang=ENG on FOH. As well as this I was thinking possibly something like this www.behringer.com/MDX4600/index.cfm?lang=ENG for the drums. We also need seperate EQ for the monitors. I've heard quite a lot of mixed opinions on Behringer products. I know its not the best kit in the world but what do u guys reckon?

Also about connecting these units...idealy would have a seperate comp/limit/gate on each channel but am I right in thinking i can use only a few on separate aux channels and route the signals requiring similar (or the same) compression etc as set on each aux channel.

Thanks

Both those units would be great pieces to add to your FOH set up. I use the big brother to the one you are looking at. The Ultra Curve 8024 and I love it.

So which one is the 'best' so to speak? 8024 or 2496? I thought the 2496 model was the latest and most feature packed? I'm not sure which one to get...

Well they are different bits of gear doing different jobs, so it will all depend on what your specifc needs and requirements are.

They are actually very similar really. The 8024 is more suited to studio use with a much larger display which the 2496 does not have. But the 2496 is much more suited to the live use. I am not sure I would want to use the 8024 live, though it is entirely usable that way.

The 2496 does have a 10 band parametric EQ which the 8024 does not have. Otherwise they are pretty much the same unit, although the 8024 has an AES/EBU i/o built in.

Thanks for the replys. Noize2u so I take it you think the ADC's are pretty good then. I've heard a lot of people slag these things off. I'm not really looking for perfection but I don't want to put something that will add noise or give a digital edge to the signal.

hilly, I can tell ya there are several of the bigger clubs around here that use Behringer gear without any problems at all. I just helped upgrade a church system for a friend who is a member there. And we installed several pieces of Behringer gear and they love it.
