Aye, but no one of THOSE illegal dodgy ones! No no, I want to make a synthised Bagpipe!!!

I am told, though I have no darn idea on how to do this as I am just getting into this virtual instrument stuff more heavily these days, it can be done with a drawbar organ type thing!

Now, I have a link here and I have the plugin (its free like) ...
rumpelrausch.de.vu/ - its the ZR1 ...

If ANYONE Can figure oot how to make an authetnic sounding bagpipe, well, Id be mighty grateful...I have tried, but keep ending up with some rowbishy sounding daft thing which is NOTHING to do with the ZR1 and all to do with my gash skills at making an instrument !!!

Cheers guys

Coco

coco, what happened to the bagpipe samples I made for ya a couple years ago? All ya need is a simple sample player and yer all good if you still have them.

I will check out the link above when I get a little more time. I just got home from work and am starving. As well I need to get Ray ready for camp and myself ready as I have to drive now since one of the drivers bailed on me at the last minute. 1200 miles round trip tommorrow, and I'm not looking forward to it.

Geez Noize!! Thats some darn trip!!! :-( !!

Woo, I htought I had it bad doing 400 miles up and down from the Highlands :-) !!

Err, I still have em somewhere bud but alas, I dont really know how to trigger em and use them in a sampler (I do have a freebie one I got with Computer Music tho, the S404 or something)...just unsure how to actually use!

Anyways, have a good trip man and all the best.

Ah yes, the 404. I havent had that installed for awhile. I was actually thinking of putting the CM music suite back in for fun. Maybe that will give me a reason to do so and then I can help ya sort it out. Its not that hard to use really.

But ya, speed limit most of the time on the way up, and then its just Tuna and I on the return trip. Crank the tunes and suck down some energy drinks and put the pedal down. The things I do for those kids in boy scouting! I hope they appreciate it.

Interesting post, Coco. I too will be in need of some pipes soon, and I've been noodling. A drawbar organ can get a close approximation, but I think it's more in the approach of the way you play it. You have to take into account the drones, and the tuning. cityofoaks.home.netcom.com/Bagpipe_Tuning.html As you will see from the link, the tuning is the key ('scuse pun) here. It's going to be the tuning, and the drones that will eventually make what you're working on sound like pipes. Try experimenting by starting with an organ type sound, and then tuning from there. Try holding down the drones, and playing the melody over the top. Remember that even though the breathing, and the bellows motion dictate the drone - and the supply of air to the pipes, there are still some "gaps" that appear in the drone. Emulating this will get you a little closer to a more authentic sound. Then there's the tremelo - which I won't even get into as I think it could be all to do with the tuning.............
Anyway, my 2 cents. Let me know how you do, as I'm going to need something soon. This stuff was just all from 'ma heed.'

Good luck,
TC

TallChap, that is it exactly. The tuning. I know lots of peeps that think the pipes to be a hideous sound. And it very well could be as most pipes are not tuned to any harmony that most people would consider sweet sounding. But when you get a full on pipe band playing and all are tuned to work together, aye it is the sweetist sound in the world. I could listen to a proper drone alone with not a note being played on top of it. That was my main reason for buying E-Mu's Proteus/3 World all those years ago. Proper pipe samples and sell tuned to boot.

Cheers Guys for the info on this thread.

Aye, I have a big piping family (in-laws anyway) with the father in law in a big (and previously recorded with album no less!) pipe band...they do well, sound good and it is unbeatable as ye say Noize.

Indeed, the wee pipes sound cool too...I forget the name of them but they sound good. The thing is, when I do nail this sound I need, I dont plan on doing the cliche, tacky "standards" that folks might expect to hear on Scottish pipes...more like rock piping ;-) !! Rockin out ... niceee!

Anyways, the search goes on.

Noize, I cannot find those samples bud but I will look again...reckon it would be worth me buying somethin to do this tho the cheaper the better as I am skint just now!!

Anyways cheers guys

Coco.

There's a band from the Los Angeles region called "Bad Haggis" (great name) that ROCK!
Their singer also plays the pipes, and it isn't the usual "Campbells are Coming" type thing.
I saw them at the local Scottish festival, and at one point the also had a full pipe band on stage with them. Amazing.
I think they might have some music on their website...not sure of the URL. "Google" the band, and I'm sure you'll find it. [aside: I hate that "Google" has become a verb!]

Hey Coco, you say you have a big piping family? Drag 'em in and tell 'em what to play!

You'll occasionaly here some pipes in Drop Kick Murphys tunes. And I think even Flogging Molly has had a wiff of pipe in their music as well. There are a few others that do as well. My youngest Ray turned me onto a band on myspace that has pipes going as well to a differant type of music. I'll look for the link later maybe. Ah I found it, www.myspace.com/needfiremusic

A little on the heaevy side but good non the less. And believe it, they are from Dallas, Texas! Who woulda thunk Celtic music even had an influance in Texas?

Let's not forget Richard Thompson (I know, hero worship..). It's not unlike him to use pipes - including Cumbrian pipes - on his stuff. He also has that "guitar as pipes" thing that's "awesome" (somebody's been watching too much "Supernova" - it's all Dave Navarro says...)

OH yes indeed. Richard is one of my early day heros so hero worship is good. Fairport Convention absolutely did it for me and I have followed him ever since.
