My most recent recordings...opinions?

Some sample stuff I have recorded:

www.myspace.com/uptheante (all 4 of these songs)

www.myspace.com/abreathb4theplunge (both of these songs)

www.myspace.com/drawnablank (last song. "Typical Day. NOTE: This is the only song of all the samples with vocals)

I am looking into buying some better gear, but any critiques, opinions, suggestions at all on these songs would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I like the sound your getting man. What gear are you using? Its no listed in your profile.

I think you could clean up a few parts where the guitars bass and drums all stop at the same time. Also, its hard to tell on myspace, but the bass could do with a little more bass on some songs? Also, the drums could come up a tad in song 6 by up the ante?

Shapes and patterns sounds really nice. I think the guitars a little too in your face though, and you could bring the drums (esp the snare) up a bit. Is there a bass guitar in there? If so, I can't hear it lol. You could possibly cut a bit of the mids/lo mids in the guitars as well, they sound a bit boomy and boxy IMO.

On thoughts and process, I'd like to hear a really big verb on the snare lol. Maybe some reverb on the kick because theres no bass, and bring the drums up a wee bit?

And can't listen to drawnablank sorry dude.

I'll try and think of some other things.

Good work though, sounds great.

yeah i need to update my profile, but here is what ive got:

Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire Mixer www.alesis.com/product.php?id=94
M-Audio Mobile Pre USB
Audix i5 Mic service.bfast.com/bfast/click?bfmid=5607...mp;bfmtype=gear
Nady DMK-7 Mic Kit service.bfast.com/bfast/click?bfmid=5607...mp;bfmtype=gear
Marshall MXL 990 Mic service.bfast.com/bfast/click?bfmid=5607...mp;bfmtype=gear
I am running Sonar PE 3 and 5 as my software.

as for your suggestions, thanks a ton, ill definitely try to re-work a few of the mixes.

for shapes and patterns/thoughts and processes, i tracked the drums through the mixer, along with a scratch track guitar. I then went back with my mobile pre USB and re-recorded the guitar on both channels...1 with an acoustic pick up (one that sits in the hole on the acoustic guitar) into my marshall park series 80 watt combo on clean, and 2 straight from the hole using my audix i5 mic.

you are right that there isnt any bass on those two songs, and in the mix i bussed the drums all to a channel in order to turn them up in the mix, but if i recall they were close to peaking (esp the snare) so didn't turn it up any further.

back on the guitars, i did a low and hi eq pass at 300 and 4500 for the guitars to cut out some of the hi/lo ends.

just a little verb added to the bass drum using the "drum room" preset under the sonitus reverb.

I am actually going to be re-recording these songs, in addition to two others, in the next few weeks (a friends band, they got a singer, etc...) so ill repost them once i start to mix, see what you think.

again, thanks for the input. anything helps.
